.243 or .260

I need some help quick. I have the oppurtunity to buy either a Surgeon Scapel in .260 Rem or a GA Precision Rock w/ Templar action in .243 Win. I need some advice on which would be better for me. I do not reload so factory match grade availability is important. It would be used primarily for tactical shooting and medium to long range events. Thanks

Buying a McLaren F1 and running grandpa's tractor fuel through it. I don't think either of those cartridges has any factory ammo worth a damn.

The current thinking is that the 260 barrel will last longer. If your going to get into serious shooting, time to Handload.

you can buy cor-bon from midway usa in the 260. decent match ammo.

that being said my next build is a 260. i can't wait. everything is ordered and i am just waiting on parts.

Nearly every store that sells ammo will carry .243. That is not the case with .260.

If you have a .260 and you forgot your ammo or something like that then you might be wishing you had a .243 ;)

since you dont reload id say buy either and re barrel to 308. not reloading is a bigger hinderance than you can imagine until you start reloading

I do not think you can go wrong with either cal.

I have both in a switch barrel but I do reload.
Corbon makes a DTAC load in 243 and shoots at 3000fps.
Barrel life is limited with the 243.
260 is a great all-around/purpose round.

HSM has match ammo in 260 Rem. I bought a few boxes from Sniper Central before Christmas. In my semi custom Savage rifle I was printing 1/4 MOA groups at 100 yards so it shoots nice.

05Vipertruck, I agree with the rest of the gentlemen on here with their recommendation to get into reloading! It isn't hard to load your own cartridges and it really isn't all that expensive either. Another facet to it also, you will learn so much more about how a rifle works and everything that goes into precision shooting. Besides that, you will find it is a great past time too ;)!

All that aside, I don't think you could wrong with either of those rifles. The .260 will offer more barrel life, as has been said. I have never heard of Templar actions so I don't know anything about them but, I have read nothing but good about Surgeon actions! Have fun!

If reloading is the issue, then I would buy a lee classic kit and learn how to reload. It is way cheaper than factory ammo and more accurate. That way you get to choose your bullet and can expand your loadings to other calibers as well.It will pay for itself in no time if you shoot alot. That way you can have any caliber that you wnat in the future.

I agree with jonbearman. You are shooting yourself in the foot (no pun intended) by choosing NOT to reload. It's not simply a matter of $$...if you can afford custom rifles, we're sure you can afford reloading equipment and be blessed with all of the choices a reloader is presented with, not to mention just plain and simple BETTER ammo custom taylored to your rifle. You could re-think that choice. The caliber?? No brainer. 6.5mm. Good luck.
