243 or 25/06

I'am thinking about buying a handi-rifle,to use for woodchucks,
coyotes and maybe whitetail deer. My question is do I get a
243 or 25/06?
I already have a 270 win that is my main deer rifle, but I want
another rifle to shoot and reload for, my son has a 223 and will
be old enough to hunt small game come spring. Thats another reason to get another gun, so that we both have a gun to shoot
varmints. Give me some opinions guy's:confused:

Thanks

I am a dedicated 25-06 man but it depends on what you really want to do. If you want to save pelts from critters you shoot don't go with the 25-06. I have never found a bullet that will not blow up critters and scatter them all over the country side. On the other hand if you want to shoot long range and have the best deer caliber ever made, in my opinion, go with the 25-06. The 243 will make you a great varmint gun and there are bullets that will not blow up a pelt in 6mm. The 243 will make an OK deer rifle also but I would use 100 gr. bullets on deer. As far as recoil goes for the little guy there is not really much difference in the calibers especially if you get the 26 inch heavy barrel in the 25-06. I know it is a tough decision.

I've recently switched to the .243, from various .223's and a .22-250. I live on a ranch and use it on coyotes, jackrabbits, and feral dogs, they kill my cattle). I've used the various .22's for years, but once range got fairly long, they wouldn't put coyotes down reliably, this might be my shooting though). I've switched to the .243 shooting the 87gr. VMax, and couldn't be happier. With a 250 yard zero, I'm + or - 2" out to 300 yards, and only down 11" at 400. I've made three shots in a row on coyotes over 300 yards. Everything I've shot has dropped instantly. These are quick shots out of the pickup, no time to range. The 87gr. VMax has a BC of .400, so it shoots pretty flat, and it should interchange well with the 85gr. Barnes TSX. This lets you shoot the VMax for practice, and substitute the TSX for deer.

I don't have any experience with the .25-06, but just looking at reloading manuals, it seems to push 100gr. bullets about as fast as the .243 pushes the 85gr. bullets. But, like I say, I don't have any first hand experience with the .25-06.

Hello, I have been shooting a 25-06 for a few years now as my go to rifle for hunting. I would say its just as versitile as the .243 win. Suited well for medium sized varmints and big game.

But, I am building a rifle in 6mm just because bullet selection. You really have so many bullet choices in the .243 caliber for varmints. The .257 caliber has a handful of very good varmint bullets, but the .243 has probably twice as many. As well as match bullets.

The .257 on the other hand has alot of good big game bullets. From 100 grain to 120 grain. The .243 has alot of match bullets in this category,100-115 grain), not as many big game bullets though above 100 grains. Probably because the twist rate of the .243 win in most factory guns.

So if it were mainly for varmints and some deer I'd say .243 win. Less powder burnt, hight B.C. varmint bullets, ton's of choices. Less recoil, easier to see hits.

If it were mainly for deer with some varminting, 25-06 rem. Lots of good big game bullets, lots of power and speed. Known dead in tracks deer slayer.

Good luck with your choice.

I really hate to hear that someone is about to get a handy rifle after I have owned 3 of them. The first one in 44 mag shot 1 1/2" at 100 yards. The next 44 Mag and 243 shot awful at 100 yards and I am a very experienced handloader.

I think that you have gotten some great advise on cartridges so far.

Good luck and best wishes!

I work in a Gun / Gunsmith shop part time. All I can tell you about the Handi-Rifle is it seems to be a 50/50 shot with them lately. We refuse to carry them now after approximately half of them wouldn't hold a group worth consideration as a "hunting rifle". If you are seriously looking at something for a youngster to shoot now and then.....please don't handicap them with a Handi-Rifle.

Just my 2 cents. But I have zeroed over 100 in the past few years and most I wouldn't give away to a friend.

well every 1 covered it well. The 25-06 does have a litle more recoil than a 243.for a kid I would say a 257 roberts.its a litle more than middle of the road but not much more.the track record is a good 1.I personaly think the 243 is under powered for deer and a kid,if he gets buck fever, hope he does) a fudged shot can be a lost deer do to less power cuz of a lighter bullet.A bad shot with a 25-06 has a lot more wack factor in it and does a little more damage due to a heavier bullet.

The 257 roberts has less recoil than the 25-06,more punch than the 243,the right bullets heavy or light at good veocitys for anything from pdogs to the bigest deer and pigs.

OK, I AGREE WITH SOME PARTS OF ALL THE RESPONSES FROM ABOVE. I CAN GIVE YOU MY REPORT FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH OK. MY PERSONAL DEER RIFLE FOR OVER 10-12 YRS. I HAVE SHOT DEER OUT TO 500 YRDS. WITH IT TOO USING FROM 100 HP, 110 HP, AND 130 GR BULLETS. I CAN SHOOT AND KNOW THIS RUGER MK 2 STAINLESS RIFLE AS WELL AS MY WIFE,LITERALLY). A PERSON WOULD NOT WANT ME FIRING AT HIM WITH IT ANYWHERE I CAN SEE HIM LET'S PUT IT THAT WAY OK, IT'S EASY TO SHOOT TO ME AND HANDLE AND IS ACCURATE AS HELL. BUT THE 25-06 IS ONE OF MY NEXT RIFLES BOUGHT, EITHER THE 25 OR A 204??). BUT LIKE SOMEONE ABOVE SAID IT IS ALMOST THE SAME AS THE .270 TOO. BUT, THE ALL ROUND RIFLE IN MY OPINION NOW IS THE .243 AND I WILL EXPLAIN IT AS WE GO. I HAVE A REM. BOLT ACTION SET UP WITH HANDLOADS SHOOTING 58 GR. HORNADY BULLETS FOR VARMINTS, AND BOY DOES IT DO IT'S JOB AND DO IT WELL. IT SHOOTS A LIL FARTHER OUT THAN A .223,MY NEXT FAVORITE RIFLE MADE) FOR VARMINTS. SO, HERE'S MY STORY ABOUT THE .243. WHEN I WAS A KID ABOUT 9-10 OR CLOSE YRS. OLD MY DAD BOUGHT AN OLD .243 REM. M788 IN .243 FROM A PAWN SHOP BECAUSE HE JUST MAINLY HUNTED BECAUSE OF ME. HE BOUGHT ME A NICE MARLIN 336CS 30-30,WHICH I STILL HAVE). HE HAS SHOT I WOULDN'T KNOW HOW MANY DEER WITH THIS RIFLE OUT TO ABOUT 400 YARDS I THINK IS THE FARTHEST. NOW, WHOEVER SAID IT DON'T HAVE DEER POWER, WELL I DISAGREE, BECAUSE IVE SEEN THE PROOF AND THE PUDDING AND ATE IT TOO. I WAS WATCHING WHEN HE CRACKED AT A DOE AT 400 YARDS AND IT HIT THE GROUND ABOUT THE SAME TIME I HEARD THE GUN GO OFF. HE HAS KILLED SO MANY DEER IN THE PAST 23-25 YRS. I CAN'T COUNT AND HE USES THE WALLY WORLD 100 GR. POINTED SOFT POINT BULLET IS ALL HE HAS EVER USED,BECAUSE IT'S THE CHEAPEST). HE'S ONE THAT COULD CARE LESS ABOUT DEER HUNTING, LIKE I SAID HE WENT TO TAKE ME WAS THE ONLY REASON. NOW I'M A TRUE BELIEVER ON THE .243 WITH DEER BECAUSE IVE SEEN A BUNCH SHOT WITH IT, AND I'D HAVE TO SAY THAT 3/4 HAVE FALLEN RIGHT IN THEIR TRACKS. BUT, ONE REASON FOR THIS IS HE IS A DEAD-EYE-DICK, NO MISSES WITH THIS MAN. HE MAKES PERFECT SHOTS. BUT, THASS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT RIGHT??? A QUICK, CLEAN KILL. THE .243 HAS LESS RECOIL AND WILL WORK FOR VARMINTS AS WELL AS DEER. TRUST ME I'VE ROLLED A GOOD NUMBER OF WOODCHUCKS AT 100-400 YRDS WITH IT AND THE 58 GR. BULLET. AND, DAD USES THE 100 GR. FOR DEER AND IT WORKS WELL. AND IN MY OPINION WITH A YOUNGSTER, THE LESS RECOIL WILL MAKE FOR A BETTER SHOT TOO. I OWN SEVERAL RIFLES AND LIKE I SAID I'M PROBABLY GONNA BUY A 25-06 NEXT OR THE .204 I DONT KNOW WHICH JUST YET. P.S.- BY THE WAY, SHOOT A COYOTE AT 200-250 WITH A 58 GR. BULLET AND THE .243 AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS, AND NONE OF MINE HAVE BEEN SHOT UP EITHER LIKE THE ABOVE RESPONSE SAID ABOUT THE 25-06....BUT BOTH ARE GREAT....THERE ARE A # OF RIFLES TO DO EVERY TYPE OF HUNTING TODAY, AND MORE AND MORE TYPE BULLETS COMING OUT ALL THE TIME. BUT IF I HAD TO BUY 1 FOR BOTH IT WOULD BE THE OLE .243. DAD'S REM. M788 IS LIKE NEW AND HAS A LEUPOLD 4-12 POWER SCOPE AND HE HAS SAID SEVERAL TIMES HE WOULD QUIT HUNTING B4 HE CHANGED RIFLES. HE HAS SAID QUOTE "WHEN I DIE, I WILL HAVE THIS SAME OLE GUN IF SOMEONE DON'T STEAL IT FIRST".....OH WELL THASS MY TALE OK, IM A FIRM BELIEVER OF THE OLE .243...AND REMEMBER IVE SEEN WHAT IT WILL DO NOT JUST HEARD TALES, AND ALSO HELPED PROCESS AND EAT WHAT THAT OLD GUN HAS BROUGHT IN......HOPE THIS HELPS YOU.....PAUL.

Paul, I tried to reply to your e-mail but something is going on with my lap top. The answer to your question about the 35 gr. bullets is right. I would start there too and work up a little at the time. Bill

I'm gonna' have to say a .243 Win. because it's a more poplular shell, and when you're varmint hunting you're gonna' be shooting... 100 rounds is what I shot at a praire dog town and I was sore with a .220 swift. The .25-06 is the same cartridge as a .30-06 or .270 and therefore kicks almost as much. But I have to admit, when I turned 11 years old I was going to hunt with a .243, the next year I bought a .30-06 and hunted with that and had not problem with the recoil. But a .243 Win is a much more popular round, and has a low kick, a perfect varmint realm.

P.S. Yamaha, I shot the biggest buck of my life at 600 yards with a 30-06 150 grain Nosler Partition,Worst bullets in the world) running. I remember it dropping and me almost falling out of my stand. The deer scored 174 1/3 and weighed 212 pounds. I hit the deer right behind the shoulder a little high. But just thought I'd share my pride and joy deer hunting story.

i would look at a stevens model 200 243. 3 position safety, no hammer tocock with small hands.very accurate for the money. mine averages about .8 groups at 100 yds.new was around 300 bucks. check one out,one of the best bangs for the buck, or varmint. cliffe

i have a .223 HANDY rifle with a 3x9x40 nikon scope and dropped several deer under 100yds,a 100+lb sheep@200)and they all dropped where they stood, plenty accurate for a HANDY high neck shot). and use it for varmints to 350yds with no problem at all.it shoots great!excellent gun to have with me.,AKA HANDY-RIFLE) i too shoot a lot of .243 and .25-06,don't think it would matter much with good shot placement.if i had to choose it would be the .243 with 90SGK or .25-06 100SMK or 87sierra flat base and would have to toss a coin, and would kinda hope it landed on the .243 side and feel bad about the .25-06 because it burns up 10-15gr more powder?

jr 1968 i'd give my nod to the stevens/200in 243 caliber. i bought one in 223 for around $220 new. shoots pretty good groups for a 200$ rifle. you could also find some used barrels in other calibers from savage rifles that will fit the s-200 action. in my opinion it would be a much better deal than the handy rifle and more accurate for only $50-70 more.________treeman

I'm with the 243 guys..better bullets to choose from...You own a 270...I can't see how to improve on that one for deer...First rifle or second gun...243win would be it...I've owned a 257 roberts..Nice enough, but a problem to load for thanks to ruger not the cartridge..You see that with classic cartridges in special editions all the time from Rem-Chester-Uger wrong twist rate or stupid amounts of freebore...& other issues..Buy a savage..If the barrel is junk it is an easy fix..& you end up spending a lot less $$$..There are no bargain custom guns out there..once you get a taste for high quality barrels..It is an expensive addiction...good luck mike in ct

jr 1968, I'm a big 'yote shooter and i would definatly go with the 243 over a 25-06 any day; simply cuz i like a short throw bolts, crucial for those follow up shots. The 6mm rem is definatly better, but as far as efficiency goes the .243 has alot going for it. My stock remmy .243 win. shoots well under an inch out to 200rds. with factory ammo. hope this helps u out.

243 will do the job and it is kid friendly. Your boy will enjoy shooting it and he will be able to hit what he shoots at. Keep the recoil down and he will be a better shooter.
