243 freebore

I'm having a new barrel chambered up for one of my rifles. It is a 27" brux 1-8 twist, light varmint barrel. It will be chambered in 243 win. This is my first 243, and I need help with what length freebore to use. I plan on shooting mostly 105 Hornady hpbt but may try some 105 berger hybrids as well. Any advice on freebore length would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Mason

I would call Dave Kiff at PTG and ask him what he recommends for your rifle.I know the 6BR shooters run about .104 thou of freebore for the same bullets but it may be slightly different for the .243.

Don- Because a 243 fits into a short action DBM much better.
Jon- I will try to call Dave tomorrow. Do you think a .104 freebore would keep me below a 3.025 OAL (max magazine length)?

You would have to measure it with a comparator or at least a hornady tool to see where and what lehgth the ogive would contact the rifling. Trust me Kiff will know.Make a dummy round with the bullet seated just above the shoulder neck junction and measure off the ogive and the tip and see what you get then call Dave and give him your dimiensions and he can determine what free bore you will need.

Mason,
If you are buying your own reamer it is best to make a dummy round (or two) with the bullet/bullets you intend to shoot. Set them up with the heal of the bullet just north of the neck shoulder junction. Then if its a repeater make sure they will fit in the mag and allow for throat erosion. Send them to whomever you choose to purchase your reamer from and they will let you know what FB would best suite your needs. My .243 Win reamer has .140 FB for 115gr DTAC'S.

He will be using the hornady 105's and 105 hybrids at this point I think the 140 freebore is too far out with what he wants to do.

I agree just threw it out there for comparison. I didn't mean to imply that would work for his needs.

I just got off the phone with Dave Kiff. Man, that guy spit so many numbers out my head was spinning! Anyways he said that a .090 freebore would keep me within magazine length and would be good for most 105gr 6mm bullets. He also said that the 105 hybrid does exceptionally will with a .030 jump and so recommended a .120 freebore if I was going to be using that bullet exclusively. THe .120 freebore would be too long to touch any bullet to the rifling and keep things within magazine length.

I have a 6 Comp Match reamer ( a .243 with 31 degree shoulder) chambered for the 105 Berger hybrids and it has 0.098 Freebore.
