243 for light varmint bullet twist

During the late 60's and into the 70's I shot a bunch of ghogs with the 243. You don't need some bizarre twist / light bullet combo to be very sucessful. It's real simple - get a 10" twist barrel, load 80 Sierra Blitz with either IMR 4350 or 4064 and you will have a tac driver that will perform very well in the wind and with outstanding terminal performance.

The reason I don't use a lot of 243 for ghog hunting these days even though I still have four 243's and absolutely love the cartridge is the I've gone to the 223 Rem because where I hunt now 99% of my shot are under 300 yards with most shot not more than 250 yards and because the area is relatively settled I want the least noise possible but the 243 is an outstanding varmint cartridge with the right twist / bullet / powder combo.

I SHOOT A 14 TWIST IN A 243 ACKLEY WITH 75GR V-MAX'S WITH VARGET WITH GREAT RESULTS AND 70GR MK GREAT RESULTS

+1 on K22's post. Only difference is that I sold off my 223 went with a 17 Rem for the relatively settled area. No regrets on that!

For chucks, yotes, hogs, and deer I find the 10twist in the 243 just the cats meow. It handles the 70-90 gr bullets very well and some of the 95's too. Most importantly it handles the 80gr Blitz and the 85gr HPBT Sierra bullets exceptionally well. Nothing totally wrong with what the original poster is wanting to do, but JMHO that the 243 handles the mid weight bullets really well in hunting situations. For the speed and bullet range the original poster is wanting I'd say go for it if that's what he wants, but would ask if he'd compared drop charts with say a 220 Swift or a 22XC with the appropriate twist rate for 50-70gr bullets.(?) JMHO. ;) WD
