.243 Factory Loaded dimensions

Looking to start a database of .243 Factory loaded ammo. If you can, can I ask for measurements of COAL (Cartridge Over All Length) and CBTO (Cartridge Base To Ogive).

Thanks in advance

SAAMI (C)OAL is from 2.54" to 2.71"

There is no such thing as a standardized CBTO length since there is no standard reference point on the ogive.

Thanks, I have the SAAMI and the CIP (for Europe) standards, I was looking to build a database of the measurements of factory loads.

Sorry my terminology may be wrong, CBTO - cartridge base is self explanatory, Ogive the point where the bullet contacts the lands?? Can be measured using a bullet comparator.

2.259" to 2.374" is standard - special orders are... well... special ;) ;) ;)

Thanks for giving me the standard ranges, now, can anyone give me the measurements from specific manufacturers .243 products?? :D

Most factory ammo is produced to stay within SaamI specs. They only worry about will it fit in the magazine.

OK!! OK!!!

I GIVE UP. . . . . . YOU WIN.

I didn't think this was a contest to win or loose. I don't know about C.I.P, but we don't have or use figures like the ones you are asking. To get the data you are asking for in the US ammunition market would take months and thousands ( and more thousands) of measurements for numbers that do not have standards over here... we just don't care about that measurement.

It did seem to turn into a competition.

I put what I thought was a simple request for information on what I thought was a fairly common measurement. Cartridge overall length is usually measured when reloading, the reloading tables give the min. OAL for each bullet. Measuring the chamber max BTO with a specific bullet and also the reloaded cartridge CBTO allows positioning of the bullet wrt the lands (Ogive) by changing the seating depth. Again I thought this was a common practice.

Each reloader will have a preferred set of target dimensions for their rifles, with each bullet/powder/brass these are not "standard" dimensions.

My request for information referred to those measurements to be taken on factory supplied rounds, not the standard to which they are manufactured. I got feedback on the SAAMI standard measurements range.

I don't understand why it would take months and thousands and thousands of measurements.

I fully accept that you don't care and I'm surprised that these measurements are not used. However I do give up.

OP,,,most shooters (competitive or big game hunter ) dont care what factory ammo is like,,,speaking for mysel,I havent fired a round of factory ammo in 50 yrs ,,!!!,,,,,Roger

MR. Essex,

Too bad you had to experience Catshooter personally.
He is considered some what of a Git and his primary contribution to a thread is controversy.

To bad you didn't have anything to offer that was better than your usual snide and ignorant remarks.

I tried to help several times, three other guys tried to help him. "Mr. Essex" got rude and testy...

... you added nothing (as usual).

Think we should draw this thread to a close. For my last post I would only say that I asked if some members could take some measurements on any factory loads they had; two common measurements. I'm interested in the measurements, not whether others consider the measurements worthless.

I think if you read back through the thread it was you who was "rude and testy", or perhaps "sarcastic" would be more accurate.

Bullet comparators do not measure at the same exact point.

I understand that a comparator will measure the point on a bullet which will first touch the ogive as it travels through the chamber throat. It is that information I wish to understand wrt factory ammo.

Have I misunderstood?

OP,,,,there are several "comperators" on the market and they all will give you different dims,(even within the same brand),,,the best data to share is over all length even though bullets do vary somewhat ,,it is way more apliciable to your question,,,Roger

Iminessex, the other problem with giving you base to ogive measurments on factory ammo is that they are almost never the same. You can take any box of just about any factory ammo and get as many as 5 different measurements in the same box. I would say that Blackhills ammo is some of the most consistent that I have measured. Nosler may be fairly consistent but even some factory MATCH ammo I have measured has varied quite a bit. It is after all mass produced stuff and most of the big manufacturers are cranking out millions of rounds a day.

So I don't think we can really give you any standard measurements to answer your question. That's why you got the responses that were given. It's not that we don't care about YOU, it's that we don't care about the measurements because they are meaningless-- as long as the cartridge goes into the magazine. Hope this helps and clarifies things some. dedogs
