243 and free recoil

I just need your advice concerning free recoil shooting with a 243 rifle. The rifle is a Tooley MBR 18 pounds and shooting on bench rest bags.

Thanks in advance,

Michel

I see no issue. Are you concerned about the recoil? I suppose that could be an issue, but I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot a .243 bench gun using free recoil.

My rule of thumb is to sight in and practice in the manner in which I intend to use the rifle. Therefore I'm not a advocate of shooting free recoil for a light hunting rifles because it may give a false sight in and may shoot differently in the field with a different hold / support system. However for heavy barrels such as yours I see not problem since the weight will mitigate the recoil especially on a light recoiling round like the 243.

Most bench shooters I know shoot "free recoil" because that's the way the compete / shoot. Also, they have heavy barreled rifles.

Try it both ways..Put moderate, but firm shoulder pressure on the stock...& your free recoil technique...The rifle & rest set up will tell you what is best...Mike in Ct...Former 243 17 lb gun shooter...
