243 and 30-06 went south???????????

last year both was shooting great both older 700's hitting with in a one in. dot at 100 and 150 yds. same shells and same load with 100 gr. partions in 243 and 4831sc all over the paper went back to rem. core lock got back into a 3 in group at both stations.. in the 06 it is everwhere with 165 gameking and my fav. load of varget has worked past 6 years getting ready for grandkids to hunt just checking out. i cleanded and oiled befour storing them no rust or copper in them. i can still hit with my 7 mag and 308 so it is not all the driver maybe some as eye sight getting worse off ever year.last year was not shooting partions was shooting gameking buy 100 grain. what am i missing? to late to get it to smith for deer season. these are fac. guns but both early 700's. thanks for any info RICK

My thoughts:
1/ Loose screws- optic mounts, action screws
2/ Bullets cold welded to necks- break free by seating a tad lower.
3/ Case necks cracked due to aged brass or corrosive atmosphere
4/ Bullets COAL different from handling with too light neck tension
5/ Used oil in storage that formed gunk in bore that prevents normal fouling.
6/ Used oil with teflon- IME will throw shots even after many foulers
7/ Scope issues- "excercise" the windage and elevation adjustments in their full range several times
8/ Firing pin assembly filled with debris hampering consistent firing pin fall......or weak springs.

perhaps the biggest clue is 'factory guns' which means to me they are walnut stocked with the pressure pad at the stock forend. with no other info i would first thing loosen the action screws, drop the butt on the floor lightly, and retorque. and if your are using tip off style weaver rings, loosen them at the bases, make sure the scope is forward, and retorque them.

love those vintage 700's, great rifles all in all.

edit... as lhsmith says, check the firing pins. a years storage with not having the firing pins dropped can affect spring tension. i have had to replace several of mine over the years to decrease lock time and inrease ignition consistency (and mask my poor trigger technique... lol)

thanks was new reloads this year new power and primers out of up stares closet not in reloading room but will check spring 9thanks0 on oil i used a small bit of krowl after ever cleaning matt guns have not been bedded pure stock carbon none in barrel throught (?) will check forgot!!!!!!!!!!!! also will take out of stock and recheck needs a good trigger check thanks to all redid scope on 06 had a m8 X4 eyes going went with a weaber extream.maybe will redo that also thanks again. if it is carbon in throught how to check no bore scope or get rid of in case?????? thanks again RICK

Since they were newly reloaded -double check your reloading regimin....something must have changed (i.e. scale off, primer tool not seating, set die wrong where shoulder is pushed back too far, wrong COAL.
Here's a vid to show how to remove carbon build-up (I recommend Iosso in lieu of JB and I don't use kroil- and just use a tight fitting patch with whatever jag you have)>

Concentrate your efforts in the first 3 inches of the barrel cleaning from the action towrards the muzzle. If the rifles have several hundred rounds through them, it may take several attempts to remove enough carbon to show accuracy improvement.

Thoughts:

Ruling out mechanical issues with mounts, stock screws, and scope, get a couple of boxes of Federal Premium ammo and sight it for hunting season thereby ruling out reloads if you don't have time to track down roots cause.

It's rare that both guns would all of a sudden start shooting wild - have someone else fire a few rounds to see if it's the shooter.

You don't need a tack driver for deer hunting. Depending on where you hunt and distances involved a three inch group at 100 yards may be sufficient. Where I hunt shots are rarely over 200 yards. In 40+ years I never shot a deer beyond 185 yards. If you can hit a 6" circle at the maximum distance you plan to shoot IN A FIELD position then you're good to go.
