.243 Ackley - 115 Tubb

Anybody shot any 115's out of a .243 AI? What powder, charge, velocities achieved?

Any data on ES, SD, MV, and MOA group sizes for particular loads? What twist and length on BBL?

Sorry, Mojoman I am in the same boat as you are. GA Precision rebbled . my .243 to .243 AI and I'm wanting to shoot the 115 dtac, my twist rate is 7.5 in a schneidner bbl. Been trying to get some info but it seems that it's all to new to hav e much input. Guess we will just hav e to be thyew front runners or wait, Jim

Guy’s, while I’m new to this forum I came here looking for this same exact information. Unfortunately I was unable to find anything for the 115MK’s anywhere so I spent much of the weekend figuring out the loads for myself…

Before I start, I am shooting a trued Remington 700 in a 243 Ackley with a .272 nk, 28 inch Hart 8 twist barrel with break, Shehane MBR laminated stock, Jewell 2oz trigger, with a 8.5-25 Leupold M1 mounted in Kelby rings. I began by chambering a donor 700 laminated 243 that I bought, with the same reamer, and fire-forming 300 Lapua cases with 100gr sierra’s behind 39.0gr of H4831sc. These cases were all turned to .013. Here is what I came up with…

I started with Rl-22, H4831SC and H1000 and began with the recommended starting loads for a regular 243 shooting the 107’s, since the improved case gives about 5% more case capacity. I loaded these cases from those starting loads in .5gr increments and went up until I began achieving pressure. I found…

Rl-22 – Worked up from 39.0gr to 46.0gr with the 115MK, 210M primers and lapua brass. At 46.0 grains the primers were starting to flatten but I am guessing I could have still gone up slightly in my rifle. Velocities at 46.0gr were 3034fps.

H4831sc – I again worked up from 39 to 46gr and with nearly the exact same velocities,3015 fps at 36.0gr) and pressure signs as RL-22.

H1000 – I worked up to 47gr of H1000 with little pressure showing but the powder was filling up the case two much and I was compressing the loads... Thus I decided to try the other two powders first…

I decided to spend the first day and just concentrate on Rl-22. I loaded 9 separate three shot groups and started at 42.0gr. What I found was relatively interesting. Since I am shooting an 8 twist barrel I figured I was going to need the velocity to get the heavy bullets to stabilize if they would at all. That’s what seemed to happen. At 42.0 gr the gun shot about an inch, at 42.5 it came in to about a half an inch and stayed there at 43.0gr. The velocities were 2817 and 2836 for 42.0 and 42.5gr respectively. Then at 43.5,2901fps) everything came together when I shot a group measuring .176 that yealded a velocity deviation of only 6 fps. Needless to say I was happy. 44.0gr began to go vertical and 44.5, 45, and 45.5 stayed at about half an inch. My last load 46.0gr again printed a great group measuring in the low .2’s and again showed only 5 fps deviation at 3034fps. Extremely happy with those two groups and the low velocity spread I decided to stop load development there hoping to conserve some of the short barrel life of the 243 Ackley.

I hope this info will help guide others in the right direction and save them some time and effort. Remember, these loads were shot in my gun and may be above max loads in other guns. For safety start LOW and work your way up. I would also reference the loads on this site,http://www.stevespages.com/243.html) for the 243 win with the 115gr bullets. Hope my experience helps and points others in the right direction. Good shooting…

I tried the Tubb 115's out of my 243 Ackley Imp. with good results piped by a 29" Lilja 8 twist at 3190 fps with RL-25 Lupua brass Federal primers. I strictly use RL-25 with all my 243 AI's

Mr. Bianchini,

Would you please give particulars on this 6mm cannon that you are achieving 3300 plus velocities with a 106 gr. Clinch River ?

Rate of twist, bbl length /manufacturer, smith etc.

Thanks for your time, Jim Brown

Jimm,

I was .010 off. I usually always start there with the matchkings because it has always worked well for me.

What was your starting and max loads using RL-25. Which one was the most accurate?

Jim,

The 6mm cannon is a 243 Ackley Imp.40°,.271) NK Farley “S” action and 30mm rings.
I have 2 Krieger 8" twist 28.5" HV,and 4 Lilja 3 groove 8” twist 29” HV barrels chambered for the gun. The 3 groove Lilja barrels help with the velocity. I have driven 106gr.Clinch Rivers and JLK 105 at 3400fps out of a 31 inch lilja with minimal excess pressure. I have to back my powder down about one grain when shooting the Krieger barrels due to the tighter bore. The Krieger’s max out about 3290fps my standard load with the Lilja barrels is a stiff load 51.8gr. RL-25 cased by Lupua brass and ignited by a Federal 210M. The scope is a Leupold 18x40 LR boosted & 1/16 MOA dot on 40x by Premier Reticles I did the stock work and the Sikken Viper Race Yellow Paint and clear Jewell 1.5oz BR trigger. Bat Machine Stainless Trigger guard Shehane McMillan ST-1000 stock from Bill Shehane,D&B Supply) Shehane TRACKER polished billet aluminum buttplate Weight 16.5 lbs.
