.243 22 inch barrel 1 in 10 twist, what weight of bullet works?

hi all. I have a Haenel jager 10 in .243 with a 22 inch barrel GRS Sporter stock and a a 1 in 10 twist. I have tried 95gn Nosler boat tails but the groups at 100m seem erratic, with two almost touching and 1 over an inch away? I'm loading vitavura 560 at 42.5gr and seating at 2.290" to 2.292". If anybody has any advice on loads and powder that works for this set up, that would be great too.
Thanks in advance

I have had success with IMR-4350 and IMR-4064 and Sierra 100 gr. SPT flat base bullets seated .010" off the lands in a 1 in 10 twist sporter barrel.

I've had great success using 90 gr nosler BT's and h4831 sc, I know it's too slow and I'm blowing powder out the end of the barrel but I could hit a golf ball at 300 and it would about rip a coyote in half! Right now I'm in the same boat, I'm starting over. This time I'm going 87gr Berger vlds and going to try RL17 and I have some imr 4831. Trying to use up some stuff I have. Good luck
Oh yeah, my gun is tikka t3 lite stainless 22" 1-10 twist barrel

maybe a bit old school but you might try Sierra's 85 grain HPBT and a modest load of H414 (or WW760, I believe they're the same powder). Deadly on anything up to and including whitetails.

So I've been trying a few different 95gr bullets in my new Howa 243, also a 10" twist. If you look at Berger's or JBM's twist rate calculators the Sierra Match King, Tipped Match King, and Berger VLD in 95gr are all right on the cusp between unstable and marginally stable. So far in my testing the Sierra Match King looks the most promising. The issue with a 10" twist is bullet weight and length. The higher BC bullets tend to be rear heavy and if a twist isn't fast enough they can destabilize- look for open groups or signs of key holing. I've not had any key holing yet, but the Bergers and Tipped Match King's haven't looked promising. My back up plans if none of these will stabilize are:

95gr bullets with a flat base
Berger 95gr classic hunter
Hornady 87gr VMax
ANYTHING after that will work!

Good luck!

IMR 4350, Federal LR primer, 85 grain Sierra boat tail shoots good for me. Anything longer opens up to 1-1 1/2 inches. But, I only have a 20" barrel.

If this is for hunting deer I recommend the 85 gr Sierra BTHP GameKing. If the game is heavier than 100 kg (220 lbs) the 100 gr Sierra Pro hunter (up to 300 yard shots) or the 100 gr Sierra SPBT Gameking (for up to 400 yard shots).

All these bullets are very accurate.

H-4831 / H-4831sc is always accurate no matter what cartridge I load it in.

Switch bullets first, then if you still don't get favorable results, it's time to try a different powder like N-160.

By the way... 42.5 gr of N-560 sounds like a VERY mild load with 95 grainers.

Also when you say the load length is 2.290" we all assume that's from cartridge base to bullet ogive, which would make it longer than 2.870" from cartridge base to bullet tip. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi, 2.290 is my COAL for the bullet to be resting on the lands/grooves. 42.5 gr is where I got to on my load development when the group tightened up, however it's not as tight as I'd like. Looking at the replies so far I am leaning towards 85gr or 100 gr, I'm generally shooting roe and fallow deer. I just wish manufacturers would do a try before you buy system where you could buy 12 rounds and a small amount of powder, as here in the UK, nothing is cheap!!

A magic load for 10Twist barrels is 41.2-42.2g of H4350, Winchester or 9 1/2 primer with a 100g Hornady BTSP or Flat base if you can find them.

We killed a lot of BIG bucks with the 95g partition shot from all angles coming and going, and this bullet should work in your 10" twist.

If your deer are smallish, the Speer 85g BTSP is a DEER bullet, not a varmint bullet and H or IMR 4350 will do a very good job for you.

Best of luck

Thanks for this, as i said to one of the others on the forum, i wish they did tester packs for cartridges and bullets, and then you wouldn't end up wasting money for things that don't work.

Thanks for this, as a matter of interest, what length is your barrel as Nosler tested their 95gr on a 24" 1 in 10 twist barrel
