.243 105 A MAX

I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint i put in an HS Precision Police stock. It has a Bushnell elite 4200 tactical 6-24x50. I have been trying to shoot the 105 grain A-MAX and just cant figure out what powder and weight to shoot out of it. I have tried ALOT of different combination s and it just wont shoot PLEASE HELP

The 105's need a 1-9 twist. so your should shoote them. But I use IMR 4350 42.5 gr. and wolf primers with great results. Mine also like a .015 jump to the lands.

Some rifles will just plain not shoot them. I have two 243ai's one shoots them great a shilen barrel 1-8" twist 6 groove, the other is a Kreiger 1-8" twist same reamer 4 groove but will not shoot them however it likes the 107gr MK. and shoots them well, groups around 3/4"-1" at 300yds.

I have owned two SPS Varmints, .223 and .308. Both had ginormous throat lengths, same as a .30-06 Rem pump I owned. I couldn`t seat 155 SMKs in the .308 to touch the lands and still be in the case neck. Must be some kind of lawyer thing to avoid high pressures in reloads?

Can you seat the 105 AMax to be .01 off the lands and still have at least 3/16 retention in the case neck?

As for the 105 AMAx itself, I shot them in a .243 Savage 12FV with a 9 1/8 twist three years ago in F Class and they were accurate out to 1000 yds. Not quite as accurate as 107 SMKs but still good enough for practise.

Didn`t mention my load for the 105 AMax in the .243.

Tried RL25, RL22, H1000 and Retumbo. Settled on a compressed load of 46.5 gr RL25. Gave 3050 fps.

My Savage shot 1/4" groups with 105 Amaxs seated at the lands over 37.5 grains of H4350. They were moving 2900fps.

Last weekend I was shooting my new 6CM barrel firer forming brass. This cartridge starts out a .243 winchester piece of brass 49 grains of Retumbo with a 105 Amax jammed in the lands. JBM showed 13.7 moa up from 100 yards to 700, this is at 3100 fps. This load has not been shot thru a cronograph. I had to come up 13 moa for 700, did not measure group but it was small. At 300 it is under .5 moa. I've built this same load for .243's and it works well. This slow burning powder works great in a barrel with some lenght to it, not to mention extended barrel life. Over 1900 rounds down my other 6CM and it has much more to go. SLOW BURNING POWDER.

rfurman, What model Savage / barrel length ? I'm shooting the same load and haven't been able to run it over a chrony yet. Quick load is saying ~ 2700fps out of a 22" barrel .

Thanks ,
Mike
