240 weatherby

thought on this case for deer out to 400 yards.what would be your choice of bullets and powder.just asking. a friend found one for sell.

A bonded bullet is a bright idea so they don't vaporize at close range. Weatherby offers 100 Hornady Interlock, 90 Acubond, and 80 Barnes TTSX. Wouldn't recommend anything less durable than those.

I’ve owned one for quite a while, just had a fresh barrel put on a few months ago.
For deer, I’ve used the 95 gr partition, 95 gr ballistic tips, 105 gr Berger and maybe a couple others. The last deer was with the Berger and was a broadside shot with a 2” exit wound, it put him straight down. I must say that I’ve killed the most with the 95 grain ballistic tips, a much tougher bullet than people realize and super accurate. They are probably my favorite, I just ordered a couple more boxes the other day.
I get excellent hunting accuracy using RL22 & H4831. It’s a magnum round and I load it to it’s potential. Awesome on large varmints like ground hogs and foxes too.
No recoil, accurate, and fast.
My buddy just bought one, he is getting it set up this week. Right now brass is hard to get but it will become available again.

Ammo and Brass is not easy to find and it's expensive.

Having a nice rifle and no ammo to shoot it with is not worth it.

The .240 Wby. is essentially a .30-06 with a belt. You can get the same performance with a 6-06, with a lot of different brass to choose from. Easy to make from .25-06 or turn necks on .30-06 if you want Lapua brass. I own a .243 Super Rockchucker, which is a slightly improved version of the 6-06 and it works well with the powders Gary mentioned above. You do need a tough bullet; the only time I had any Partition to not exit was a 100 gr. with this caliber on a large 8 pt. whitetail @ about 125 yds. It was a behind the shoulder shot and it dropped him, but no exit. Inside looked like hamburger, performed much like a polymer tipped bullet at close range. Guessing the bullet was designed for .243 velocity. This was some dozen years ago and we have a variety of tough bullets now, plus Partitions may be different now.
