240 weatherby magnum for varmints

Is there anything inherently wrong with the 240 WM case ? I was looking at the 6mm AI but the gun smith in my area does not chamber for it and just was down right offended when i suggested it might be a bit faster then the 243 AI he chambers for.Well all his 243 AI reamers are tight neck.Since time is becoming hard to get now a days i was thinking about the 240 WM for a load and shoot alternative for the 6mm AI or the 6mm - 284.He does have the reamer and i think it is standard neck.
Thanks for the input.

Its not looking real good for the weatherby, info on this round is real hard to get.I Think it would shoot a 75 grain bullet 3800 fps in a 1 in 14 but i don't know much about the belted norma case other then it runs about 1 dollar a piece.

Howdy Sir,

If you ever cruise the Savageshooters sight, you might look up Joel Russo. IIRC, he posted a pic of a long action Savage he built that's chambered for the 240 Weatherby.

I'm pretty sure the pic is in the "Show me your Savage bench/varmint guns" thread.

HTH

I hear ya the the 240 is over bore.I am going to order a prefit barrel for my Savage 12 low profile in a 6mm AI no turn neck, get the go, no go gages and do this thing on the cheap and see how i like it.I'm not ready to sink the time or the money into a true custom rig yet.
Thanks !

I like the 243 AI because of the Lapua brass that is available....nuthin wrong with the 6mmAI....and get a reamer with a 275 or 276 nk.,,no turn))it will simplify your brass prep and save hours of time.......if u shoot much you will need it again!!!...no matter wich u go with....dont go with the .240...the cases are hard to find...very expensive...and not as good as Lapua....
