240 Weatherby Build

I would like to build a 240 Weatherby and need some Ideas and help.
For the action I would like to use a Pierce Titanium long action but I cannot make up my mind on the barrel.
I would think that a 24-26 inch length would be good so I can get all the FPS that the cartridge is capable of.
Do I need to go with a heavy contour to provide the best accuracy or can I step down a bit to help keep down the weight of the total rifle.
I will use the rifle for hunting and no paper punching,using 60gr bergers for coyote and 85gr hornady bonded for deer.
With the fairly short bullets should I order my own reamer??
Sorry so many questions but I need your help.

Have thought about 6mm Ackley but have always wanted a 240 Weatherby.
I have no concerns about brass cost or barrel life as it will not see that much use.

Using the titanium action, I assume you are trying to keep the weight down. I have a 6.5 x 47 hunting rifle built on a 26" fluted Brux #3 contour and for its purpose, shooting one or two shots quickly, accuracy doesn't suffer that much. On your reamer question, I would speak with Dave Kiff at PT&G to get a handle on an optimum freebore for the bullets you wish to shoot.

The 240 Weatherby is basically the same as a 6mm 06. The Weatherby cases are expensive and sometimes very hard to find. The 6mm06 is just as fast and more accurate than a Weatherby case. 6mm 06 cases easy to get, Quality brass is also available.

The 243 Winchester Ackley improved is just as fast as both the above somewhat, doesn't hold as much powder. Cases are available any place in the world practically and very easy to form. Accuracy is very good. Quality brass is available. Case life is somewhat better than the rest.

Finally the 6mm Remington Ackley improved (I have one). Cases can be harder to find but other cases are very abundant that can be easily formed. One would never have a problem finding cases anywhere in the world.
Accuracy is Excellent. Speed is up there with any of the 6mm cases mentioned in this discussion if not more so!
I chose this case after carefully considering my options, with "speed" uppermost in my mind and no consideration of barrel life whatsoever, I was not disappointed! I will always own mine.

Just keep in mind that speed is really great, but one has to be able to hit what they are hunting for are all the speed in the world is useless!

My personal opinion of you wanting to build/buy a 240/6mm Weatherby is it's the worst choice you could make! Any of the others above will beat it.

Yes, I would buy my own reamer. As stated above talk to dave at PT&G and work up your own neck and freebore.

I did reply accordingly, and I have the utmost respect for his question, the OP is obviously interested in velocity out of the 6mm .

I gave him the best information available through experience with these different calibers through personnel experience witch could save him from making a mistake do to lack of experience in this area witch it seems YOU think it is OK!

He is intelligent enough to hear the reality of things and make up his own mind as to his situation wants/needs.

Should he buy his own reamer, NO!
This is a long time endeavour for the OP and he doesn't need to buy something that practically every gunsmith in existence has in stock for making any of the above mentioned calibers.

By posting negative vibes to the Op about my information you are sending messages of distrust to him.

Buddy has 1 (his walking varminter). He spec'd his as follows 26" 10 tw Kreiger(1.250 for 3" taper to .720 mzl) 0 freebore (he feeds from mag) in a McM (hunter I believe) stock. If your upper bullet weight is 85 grs. I'd look at a 12 tw

Sounds like a fun project.... Personally I would opt for a 28" pipe for that caliber if the length doesn't bother you... Secondly choose the twist rate carefully , a tight twist might work nice for the heavies but may not give the velocities you strive for with the lighter bullets. Be sure to tell the reamer mfg your preferred bullet wieght so they can get the throat length as close to optimum .

It would seem that the twist rate choice will the toughest call to make as I want both the 60gr Bergers and 85gr Hornady to shoot equally well.I do believe a little over twist is not as bad as to little twist.My AR with a 1/9 twist in 243wssm 22" barrel shoots them both very well without any light jacket bullet problems.Also have a Winchester 243wssm coyote special 1/10 twist and shoots both equally well.
Do you think a 1/10 twist would be a better choice for a 26" barrel.

I personally have had two 240 weatherbys built first was built on a weather by mark v standard action with a shilen 10 twist and it will stabilize up to the 105 bergers but is at its best with 95 bergers running at 3450 fps 26" barrel second was built on a Remington xr-100 action with a 28 inch kreiger 8 twist to handle the 115 bergers. If you intend on using 95+ grain bullets the sammi reamer works great but for shorter bullets you will want to spec your reamer

If a 85 is the heaviest you plan to shoot, then a 12 twist is what you want. I also would go with a 28" if the length doesn't bother you.
