230 OTM Bergers in a 300RUM Loads

Anyone running the 230's in a RUM?

I have a new barrel on mine and decided to give them, a try. During break-in, I ran up to 85 gr of H1000 but had pressure near the top. Tried Retumbo, found a nice load with both 87 and 88gr showing awesome accuracy with no pressure signs. Loaded 3 rounds yesterday to shoot over the Magnetospeed and got 2997, 3000, and 2998 fps. It was 10* out so this was a quick event with the ammo in my truck, then pocket, until I was ready to shoot.

Just curious what others have been finding.

I have both powders as well as the new R-26 however I am a fan of the Hodgon Extreme powders for a hunting rifle. I have seen 70* swings on a given day up in Alaska. As a hunting rifle, if the load holds at distance when the snow melts, I am done with load development. The 300RUM isn't kind to barrels and I don't need F-class accuracy. Right now 3 shot groups go into a nice 3/8-1/2" hole at 100 yards. I was quite surprised by the velocity of the load and was curious what others were finding. I look forward to verifying the velocity at longer distances.

I have not shot anything heavier in my RUM than 200 grains. Retumbo works GREAT with that weight bullet. It might even work well with heavier bullets. However, I would opt for H50BMG. It is a tad slower than Retumbo and should work very well with a 230. Additionally, H50BMG is an "Extreme" powder!

I got a customer using re33 w the 230s and getting 1/4 moa out of it. A little over 3000 fps with no pressure signs.

Have a Rem 700 in 300 RUM. With Norma brass, FGM 215M primers, 230 Berger hybrids (not OTM), 28" Bartlein barrel, and 85.6 gr H1000, getting 2970 fps and good accuracy. No pressure signs and could have gone a little higher, but saw no need to. Tried Retumbo, but couldn't get the same accuracy.

In stock Rem 700 Sendero 26" barrel I got very good groups at 300 yds with Berger 230 OTM / 100.5 grs US896 no pressure signs. Another good powder is Ramshot Magnum.

1-10" Bartlein bbl. I have H50BMG as well, but I am so pleased with the Retumbo load that I probably won't pursue it any farther. I shot out my last RUM barrel chasing the magical less than 1/4MOA load. No regrets but I didn't get anywhere as it was a factory barrel. It did an honest 1/2MOA most of the time but it went bad fast. Not making the same mistake twice. I have this rifle/load dialed in with 32 rounds down the tube. When it warms, I will confirm everything out to 1000 and put it away.

10 twist
28.5" Krieger
Custom action
Nosler brass
230 grain bergers coated (tungsten)
99.5-100.5 grains of RL33 on the high end 100.5 was running just over 3150fps.

Now I see how you get so much powder in. Long throat, long OAL, heavy charge of slow powder equals high velocity with heavy bullet.

300 RUM, SAAMI chamber, 27" barrel, Berger 230 OTM, Ramshot LRT power got me up past 3,000 fps with no pressure signs. Found an accuracy node (0.2" three-shot group at 100 yards) at 2,950 fps. If you back off the max load a bit, your barrel will last longer. : )

Wow,
Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I have sold off the RUM to a friend who loves it. I've since moved on to a 300 Norma Mag Improved from Ryan Pierce. Same ballistics, but better brass life.
