22x55 swede loads?

Just wondering about some 22x55 loads. I'll be loading Berger 80gr VLD's. I got about 1000 pieces of prepped brass so I need to work up a good load. Thank you guys for your knowledge.

Hopefully you're asking about the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser case necked down to .224" diameter.

I don't have any information about this cartridge in particular but you can reference:

.224 Clark (7x57 case)

.226 Barnes QT (Quick Twist)

Yes, I know that the .226 is really .228 and there isn't any true crossover but the information is available and might provide some insight.

Also similar would be the .22-6mm Rem. with slightly less case capacity.

I had one of these similar to what you're talking about, mine was called the .224 Vais. Shortly after putting everything together I found a chart that gave expected barrel life for X number of grains of powder for a given bore size. The chart gave me an expected barrel life of 800-850 rounds because of funneling that much burning powder down a .22 caliber bore (blowtorch effect). A friend of mine had a similar rifle built (same caliber) but he had his set back and re-chambered for 22-250 Ackley improved. Mine, I found a guy that wanted it worse than I did, so I traded him for pictures of dead Presidents and it followed him home.

Sounds like a fun experiment, I love big 22s! 1000 pieces of prepped brass, that's a lot to begin a project of this type. Just a wild azz guess, did you buy a bunch of those military blanks for their primer and neck them down?

Anyway, I've got a lot of experience with 22-6mm, but you have even more case capacity so they will not be the same. Furthermore, mine were designed as a point blank laser beam for coyotes with a slow 1-14 twist using mostly 52 grain Watson match bullets. You've got a completely different animal that should perform well at 1000 yards and beyond.

However, I can make an educated guess as to powders and will predict H4831 on the faster side or Reloader 22 a little slower would be excellent performers with that 80 grain bullet. I believe one of those two would really get the job done in terms of velocity and accuracy with that bullet.

That .224 Vias that George Vais has successfully promoted has a strong reputation from it's users!

I'm a little surprised you didn't consider barrel life until after the project was complete. But, what the heck, it's your money and most of us have changed our minds about a project somewhere down the line. I would like to know how that rifle performed, I'll bet it's awesome.

Back, I think middle 90s, Sam Lair built me a 22-284 and I used some 90 grain bullets that Jimmy Knox made for a few of us that were playing with it. It was very hard on bullets until we slowed the velocity down. I rebarrelled it in 6.5x2784.

So, there’s a story behind this build. I had a great friend that passed away. Before he died, he gave me a bunch of reamers and he had all this brass (Lapua) that he gave me as well. So I had to put this thing together. I used a fairly new 700 long range hunter in 25-06 and rebarrelled it with a Wilson 7.5 twist. Threw on a BAT brake. He did have some loaded rounds that I have shot but didn’t group the best (just under an inch at 100). He was using RL 19. So Im looking to try some other loads and since I’ve never loaded for this, thought I’d throw it out to you guys. There’s a ton of info on this page but none that I’ve found for this cartridge.

I have alot of time with the 224 Vais. It is hard on barrels but fun to shoot at groundhogs. I used to use Reloader 22 however the most accurate loads are with H1000 and Reloader 26. My current favorite load is 51.4 gr of Re 26 and 80gr SMK at 3660 fps
