Seems to be a little interest in this round, so I thought I'd share my latest project.

Made up a dummy with an 80 grain Berger VLD seated to where I wanted it, and sent it to JGS:

Since this is for a dedicated coyote hunting, carrying, calling, killin' gun, it's built sporter style:

Barrel is an eight twist Bartein 2b contour, cut & crowned at 23"

Stock is a McM Edge Classic, sans paint, with 2 flush cups & 2 S/S sling studs.

Seekins 20 MOA Picatinny rail and lapped 30mm medium rings on top.

Scope is a Nightforce Compact NXS 2.5-10x32 HS ZS with the illuminated IHR reticle.

Low tech farting around comparing capacities, using AA-2230 to the bottom of the necks (cause it flows like water), the 22x47 has a grain and a half advantage over a 22-250 in fired brass. Likely more if I'd only gone to the shoulder.

The 22-250 has around .050" total case taper with a 28* shoulder, the 47 has .013 taper and a 30* shoulder angle. Damn close to a factory "Improved" case.

So load work began, with the Berger 80 VLD's in the lands, and three powders that I had on the shelf, Varget, H-4350, and H4831-SC. Based on research, and past experience with a 22-250 AI, I figured the H-4350 was the place to be, but I wanted to explore both sides of it, speed wise. Primers were Remington 7 1/2's. An extra 6.5-20x50 LRT Leupold was mounted up, and testing commenced.

As figured, 4831 was a touch too slow, and crunching powder before reaching top velocity. I found a good load with the other pair, so I had a shoot off between them, while testing bullet seating at the same time. I found pretty good accuracy at .060" off, but it still didn't match in the lands accuracy. When the smoke cleared, H-4350, with the Bergers in the lands, won out.

I have one myself and like it. I fell prey to the suppressor bug and chambered up an old Hart barrel for the can and doubt I'll remount the .22x47 barrel. Superbly accurate.

I'm chopping mine at 22" for handiness. I'll be tickled with 3300 or better from the 80.5.

It should reach about the same, 3370, lose a few fps from the inch of barrel, gain it back with a shorter bearing surface.

FYI, I lost 30 fps seated off the lands.

Since I load for both the 6 and 6.5x47 cases, I didn't have to buy anything new to load the 22. I even had a .252" and .250" bushings left over from past toys.

I have a 6.5x47 full length bushing die and a 6 x47 bushing neck die to handle case forming and sizing chores, and use a Wilson 6x47 inline bullet seater for stuffin' bullets.

Thanks for the thread. I have the bug and you have built what I've been wanting to build. I have a 6.5,25 & 6 x47, so it will be easy to load for a 22x47.

Looks like a great state of the art coyote rifle.
Thanks Hal....I agree......:D

How does it shoot?
Damn good........:D

What does it weight ?
Weighs in at 8-10. A little more than what I prefer, but I substituted a little extra weight for the absolute reliability of the Nightforce scope (19 ozs) and Seekings rings & bases (7 ozs).

The Bartlein 2b is a little porky at a half ounce over three pounds as well. It replaced a 2 lb 8 oz #3 Brux 22" 6x47 barrel.

Al, is the presumption that .257" NK diameter equates to, "no-turn", correct? RG
Hey Randy.....

Yes, no turn. JGS had a .256" on the shelf (with a short freebore) that they considered no turn, but my dummy was .2545" on the fat side. I felt .257" was a better option.

My dummy round was made on one case that had been shot 12 times as a pressure test in a 6.5x47 barrel. I trimmed it to 1.850", and once down to 22 caliber, it had grown to 1.860", so that's why I specified a 1.870" case length. My 100 pieces have been shot a couple times now, and barely make 1.850"......go figure.

Velocity with this winning load is 3370.......

Oh, you'll be real happy with that on coyotes!
My .22-243AI fireforming loads run in that range with an 80, but that's courtesy of 4" more barrel. Needless to say, that'll be a coyote thumpin' SOB! Impressive speed from only 22" of tube, you've got a winner there... :)

Very nicely appointed rifle, best of luck & have fun!!!
