22lr trainer pistol

Hello,
I have been enjoying using a 22 rifle trainer and would like to do the same with a pistol. Looking for suggestions on an affordable full size accurate 22. Basically the vudoo of pistols but hopefully cheaper. Have no experience with handguns so just some tips to get me pointed in the right direction to start research would be great. also as soon as my dead mask silencer gets out of jail I would Like to be able to screw that on without any modifications as well.

Thanks!

First, do you have a centerfire pistol? S&W makes a full size trainer ( M&P 22 ) that matches their M&P 9mm's. If you want a great target pistol, S&W Victory 22 very good, for less than $400.00 that is threaded. You can get 22LR conversion kits for 1911, Glock, and others. Now if you want to go to the Vudoo of 22 pistols, look at the model 41 S&W, they run around $1400.00 new.

I still haven't made the leap on anything yet... got put on the back burner for now... still been reading on it all though. I'll probably end up buying a few different ones...

I shoot my .22 pistols mainly for fun, and when at the range I shoot them last, after I have shot my centerfire pistols. The reason for this is that there is very little recoil with .22, and I find my technique can get sloppy with how I grip the pistol, and handle recoil. While some things translate from shooting a .22 to shooting a larger caliber pistol with recoil, I would not rely on .22 to help your centerfire pistol skills that much.

Buy the .22 to have fun with, and have another excuse to go to the range. I would NOT get the Walther P22, but something more accurate and reliable, like a Ruger MK II or Browning Buckmark.

I have and use Browning Buckmarks and Ruger MKII semi auto 22's. Also have a couple S&W k frame 22 revolvers. I highly recommend these.

As a former Bullseye competition shooter I came to the conclusion that the shooting of the twenty-two was the best thing going in learning how to shoot. First of all relatively inexpensive ammunition so you can/will shoot it more and less recoil than the center fires . If your center-fires are pistols then make your 22 a revolver, I like the S&W K -22, and if you shoot semi-auto’s a Ruger Mark II is a good buy. Here’s something to think about: If you can’t hit something accurately with a 22 ALL the time what makes one think you’ll do better with the larger calibers . Slinging lead ain’t shooting!!!!! PS. I would suggest shooting the 22 FIRST before you shoot the center-fire pistols ,think about it!!

^ what he said.

As a lifelong pistol competitor , I would like to add: purchase or download the U S Army Marksmanship Unit Pistol Training Manual. Then read it and follow the fundamentals. The difference that separates the OK pistol shooters from the great pistol shooters is when you train, if anything in your set up is wrong, STOP, and start over, don't just squeeze the trigger to get the shot sequence over with. Discipline is your friend, really.

Good luck, enjoy. https://archive.org/details/firearm...nit---pistol-marksmanship-training-g/mode/2up

Ruger Mklll are very nice, accurate and a boatload of goodies available. The grip angle is a little steep but usable. Maybe a 22/45.

If you could get your hands on a copy of "The Pistol Shooters Treasury" By Gil Hebard. I have loaned and re-purchased multiple copies over the years, seams no one wants to give them back. Much information compiled from renowned competitive pistol shooters. I don't know if it is in print now but I am sure you can locate a copy somewhere.

My copy from 1973.

Based on your description, you are looking for a 22lr pistol as a trainer for the introduction into handguns, not necessarily a copy of an existing handgun to emulate the ergonomics. And perhaps the cost effectiveness of the handgun and lower price ammo. And you would like a pistol with some degree of accuracy. Take a look at the Ruger MK series. I have both a Ruger MKII target pistol and a S&W MP22. The Ruger is clearly the more accurate of the two. The Rugers are also pretty durable. Have a buddy who has a Ruger MK series pistol from the 60's with well over 400,000 rounds on it and it still shoots well. You don't need to buy some exorbitant priced custom pistol if you are just going to use it for the purpose I believe you are describing. Eventually, I think you are going to want to move on to a centerfire pistol. A 22lr pistol will definitely train you. Hope this helps.

I have been shooting the first generation of Browning Buckmark's since they came out. It is very accurate and durable. I don't know how many rounds down it, but 1000's. The S&W Victory has really good reviews. I may try one. I'm in search of a couple new .22lr pistols, maybe even another revolver. I also like what I've read on the Taurus TX 22 and the Ruger SR 22.

For general pistol marksmanship training the Ruger Mark series, Browning Buckmark or S&Ws are excellent. If you own or are planning to buy a centerfire pistol or revolver getting one similar to the centerfire can't hurt. I've got Walther PPQs in both .22 and 9mm and it helps a lot that they have the same size and controls. The .22 is lighter and the internals are different, but it's still a very useful practice gun with 9mm ammo being so pricey and hard to find these days. S&W M&P series and now Glock also have .22s that mirror their centerfire pistols. Similar guns also exist from Ruger, S&W, etc. for their revolvers.

Had a Buckmark for over 30 years. Shot IHMSA with it for years. Next in line is my Ruger MKI 6&7/8th bbl. Slightly less accurate, but handles better. Thousands of rounds thru it without problems.

The week of Christmas I bought 3 handguns. 2 are .22rf, one is the Taurus TX22 , other is the GSG Firefly. Both shoot very good for trainers.

22RF is a great training aid, especially suppressed. Lots of good choices out there, among the best in my opinion is the Ruger 22/45 lite MK 4, accurate, suppressor ready, easier to clean than previous models. Another good choice is the CZ Kadet either as an upper or whole pistol. Tactical Solutions makes an upper for Glocks that is nice if you like plastic pistols. Buckmarks, High Standard, and S&W model 41 are all good choices although some are harder to suppress.

If you like 1911's and want accuracy <1" at 50 yards get a Marvel Unit 1. It's a 1911 top end that'll fit on your 1911 frame.

Cant go wrong with the S&W Victory. I shoot it more accurately than any pistol I have, even without the RDS.

All good recommendations. I have shot 1911s for about 60 years and use one in Bullseye competition. I do have a Bob Marvel build conversion for 22 and use it a lot to transition from a rimfire league to centerfire because of the trigger weight difference. I have many Ruger Mark XXs, a couple of S&W 41s, and a Commie IZH in 22, as well as the recommended K-22. But here is a great tip if you want instant feedback on your trigger control - shoot a 10M air pistol. I shoot both a single shot Steyr LP10 and, more to your point, a 5 shot Steyr LP5 with a red dot. I practice sustained fire with the latter. There is no recoil and if the dot moves it is because of the old, fat, and unstable operator. Great and instant feedback.
