22LR bullet Lube

Looking for some good advice on some great old Eley TenX that I hve that the bullet lube has dried and crumbed off.
I have heard from some folks that if I continue to shoot this ammo in my Match rifle in matches, that it will more than likley increase the bore erosion in the troat area. Im a little leary of such comments being true as there is alot of speculation without hard data. Even with that being said I can see where non uniform lube would affect accuarcy of the ammo as i use it. Im looking for a fix to RELUBE the bullets on this Vintage 10X ELEY ammo.

Any experinced folks in this Forum on such issues as this?

Decades back, when Precision Shooting was all black and white, one of the regular writers, Merill Martin, intentionally wiped as much lube as he could from match .22 rimfire bullets, and dipped them (50 at at a time, using the plastic holders that higher grade stuff comes in) in a syrup consistency mixture of rosin powder dissolved in alcohol, (and then let it dry). If I remember correctly, he was trying to address the problem of lube building up in rifle bores to the point where accuracy was degraded. I believe that he reported good results, but I also seem to remember something about this being illegal in some competition rules.

Thats a good idea using the 50 round cartridge holder to hold the ammo for dipping or what ever needs to be done. I wonder if Bilistol would work?

Check on one of the rimfire forums. They have cussed and discussed this issue and traded different formulas for the wax to us.

How about liquid Alox. I have used this on old blackpowder cartridge rifles and pistols with good results. BSA .310 cadet, 38 long colt, and 44 rimfire to name a few. 45/70SS

I had exactly the same problem with old Ely 10X. I melted Bees wax with crisco 50/50 let it re harden. Then wiped it on the bullets that I had previously wiped the old dried lube off of with a turkish towel. Works well. I also tried Lee liquid alox and a liquid moly dip and these too worked but not quite as well as the bees wax/crisco mixture.

The question is,

If I use any of the suggested methods. Will I have accuracy issues when I take this ammo to the National Matches @ Camp Perry? I appreciate all suggestions so far. Keep them comming.

I wonder if while the wax is still soft and in its liquid state I could dip the lead part of the bullet in the concoction using the 50 round holder that Mr Boyd suggested erlier. that would make for some speedy lubing. maybe more even as well.

I tried mechanically wiping the lube residue and lead oxide off some old Eley and Lapua match ammo. Just wiping with a blue paper shop towel, I loosened too many of the bullets. I don't mind too much having to wipe and relube the bullets, but I'm wondering if there is a solvent that could be used to completely clean the bullets without loosening them and possibly contaminating the powder.

I also have some old Winchester rifle match ammo with dry crusty bullets that I would try to clean.

Ya want info on bullet lube, give this a try. Not all is 22 rf but you will get the idea.

If I was headed to Camp Perry to shoot, I wouldn't rely on old re-lubed ammo. I would have a brick of the best I could afford. Use the old re-lubed stuff for practice.

Mr Beckett

Thank you for the link. That should help. I do agree that maybe some fresh Eley is in order for the Nationals, This stuff shoots very well.. as good as the best new Ten X that I have right now, I just have not shot alot at one time, and that concerns me if Im going to shoot several 1600's or i guess 1200 shot matches now in a row.
Its kinda a catch 22 on this situiation, Ill need to test with the bullet lube in long duration, to confirm no degradation of accuracy will occur and at the same time my stock dwindles to the point I may not have much left over for CampPerry...
What happend to affordable match ammo for the 22LR.

Thanks again for all your help

If I was going to use Lee liquid alox (LLA), I would first thin it out with mineral spirits, maybe in a ratio of about 8 to 1 , ms/lla. This is what I use to coat my cast bullets, before I run them thru my Star sizer. Gives a light coat on the nose of the bullet
