22lr build where to start

Im looking to start shooting 22lr.
Where do i start.
1022
40x
455
Am not sure where to start
Do i buy a good gun to start or build a full custom.
Any info would help thanks

Depends what you want.. bolt action or semi auto.

Semi auto, build a custom KIDD.. i just did it.. hands down best way to go.

Bolt action... im sure others will chime in to help with that.

Jortz,

First what do you want to shoot? Plinking to Benchrest. I started with sporter 10-22 later add a bull barrel. I then add a Ruger Target 10-22 that shoots very well, added a Kidd 2 stage trigger to it. I then got a Kidd Supergrade 10-22 in a Titan stock, that is the top line for a 10-22 IMO. The Kidd trigger puts the 10-22 in it's own class.

I just got a CZ 455 Varmint, I changed the trigger spring, everything factory. It shooter very well. The CZ 455 Varmint would good for the money.

The 40X is one of the top bolt gun, just below a custom action.

I guess, it depends on what you want to shoot and how much you want to spend.

Im looking for an all around gun. Most will be shooting targets with friends. Mabey some local paper shoots or egg shoots stuff like that

Ive got three .22 rifles. One is a Marlin 880SS with a 22" barrel, second is a Ruger American Predator in 22LR with an OD green stock and a threaded 18" barrel. Last but not least is a Custom Ruger 10/22. I have a KIDD 16" ultralight weight barrel with kidd scalloped bolt and a BX trigger on it. The Ruger American is VERY accurate with CCI SV, it shoots 1/2 MOA at 50yds resting it on the back of a pickup. My KIDD rifle is brand new and have not grouped with it yet as I previously had a 16" fedderson bull barrel on her which shot 1/2 MOA at 50yds also. Out of all three I really LIKE my KIDD rifle the best. It is one SWEET setup.

If I were you I would start with a stripped ruger 10/22 action and build from the ground up. You cant go wrong doing it this way

455 is a very good bang-for-the-buck all around gun. If money is no object look at a kk500, Bleiker etc. Some good used 22s out there but you need to be careful they weren't abused. Like mentioned above 10-22 can be made to shoot very well. Lots of fun choices and a lot depends on how much $ you want to spend.

I'm in the process of my first build br build. This is what I have gone with. Not saying it's the best but it will be mine.
455 action
Custom walnut and beech stock
Feddersen Bbl
Stock trigger at 8oz
Glass and pillar bedded.Barrel free floated
Weaver t36
Pappas mid barrel tuner
Being retired I wanted a budget build.Waiting to see how this turns out.Hopefully it's a shooter.

Buy once cry once. Perhaps a used Anschutz 54 MS or 1407 in good condition for $1000-$1400. They are light enough to be carried and shot offhand, plus they are very accurate with nice triggers. The model 64 actions will cost a little less and they shoot nearly as well.

Still pretty broad parameters.
Will you be hunting with it? If so, then a sporter configuration will serve you best as an "all around" rifle.
Do you want/need rapid follow up shots? If so, then go with a 10/22 or Remington 597. If not, I'd recommend a bolt action sporter like a CZ (I'd prefer the 452), Marlin, Savage, etc... There are many great used guns no longer produced like the various and sundry Winchesters, Remingtons, Mossbergs, ad nauseam.
I would stay away from high end (expensive) sporters or target models until your tastes and intentions become clearer. You can always sell and upgrade. Your choice of sighting arrangement and ammo choice will be greater factors than the rifle of choice.

Yes you can. Could have just been my parts, but I tried it. A KIDD barrel will not fit a factory ruger 10/22 receiver. It is made for the KIDD receiver, its way too tight of fit, even freezing the barrel, heating the receiver... Word of advice just start buying KIDD parts from the get go.

If you want to do a custom 10/22, given the production variations in factory 10/22 receivers, Sniper338's advice is spot on. Just go Kidd all the way from the get-go and avoid OEM Ruger production tolerance problems.

I got lucky - my Kidd barrel fits the Ruger OEM receiver I fit it to, but it was tight, even with the freezer barrel/heated receiver trick. Go Kidd all the way and avoid the luck of the draw problems.

So what kind of accuracy can u get out of a kidd 1022

With ammo it likes, not top of the line stuff, expect 0.2" 5-shots at 50 on centers, once you learn how it likes to be held, on a steady condition. On the cheap, send a pawnshop beater 10-22 to Randy at CPC, and for under 200 he will make it shoot right with a Kidd, and qualify for factory division in any 22 match, while working double-duty as a squirrel gun. For a benchrest 10-22, joe Chacon is the man. Even ryday all purpose bolt action repeater, Savage mk2, 2 out of 3 seem to have great factory accuracy, and cheap. No matter what, you will play the ammo game. Seymour

My Kidd Supergrade will shoot 0.25" at 50yds. 0.5" at 100yds using CCI SV. Eley Club and Lapua Center X will take it to 0.2" at 50 yds, and 0.4" at 100yds. The key to the Kidd is the rear anchor. The Titan stock has a rear anchor made to fit the Kidd action, it is the only setup that is drop-in, NO Stock inlet required. You can now buy a Supergrade barreled action for the same price as the slip fit action. The only downside to the supergrade, Kidd is the only one making the barrel for the supergrade action, Not a problem for me. IMO Kidd makes the best barrels for a 10-22. I have around $900.00 in a complete barreled action Supergrade, and $200 in the Titan stock and anchor. I have a Factory Target ($500.00)with a Kidd 2 Stage trigger ($300.00) $800.00 total. That is $300 from Supergrade. If you get a stock 10-22 and build, you can put a ton of money into it. Just look at everything

Since plinking with friends is on the list, you might start slow and work your way up. Kidd stuff is awesome but you may not find you need (or want) to spend the money on a full-tilt Kidd setup. Here's an approach to consider:
-Buy a 10/22.
-Shoot it for a while.
-Replace the barrel (Green Mountain is a good inexpensive option).
-Shoot it for a while.
-Replace the trigger with a Kidd unit.
-Shoot it for a while.
If at this point you feel the need to squeeze out the last fraction of an inch in accuracy, put the factory trigger back in and sell the gun (with or without the GM barrel installed). Now you can go crazy with all custom components without being out a lot of money after the testing/learning process.

But then again you might find that the Kidd trigger and Green Mountain barrel are plenty for your purposes.

My Kidd barrel 20" Mele stock gun will shoot some groups in the .1's at 50yds. It isn't even bedded or rear tanged. I have a J&L PRX II tuner set on 186 and SK Pistol Match is super accurate.

MIGHT WANT TO LOOK AT A H/R MODEL 12 THEY MAKE FOR SOME FINE SHOOTING 22'S AND DONT HAVE TO TAKE AT ALOAN FOR ONE SEEN SO FINE CUSTOM WORK WITH THEM ALSO

I didnt have much of a problem at all installing my KIDD barrel. I actually took fine grit emery cloth and polished the inside of the receiver(where the barrel tenon goes in) and the barrel went in very smoothly.
