22BR wildcat options

I'm looking at option to push a 80gr ELD M .224 bullet at around 3100-3300 fps out of a 26-28" barrel. I did this out out of my 22-250 AI with ease and my load just averaged over 3200fps with N160 with pressure around 47kpsi.

Is a 22-250 AI still the logical option or will a 22br, 22bra, 22brx or 22dasher be a more logical option, especially considering barrel life and accuracy. Any other 22 that is perhaps worth considering?

Also, can some please assist with the case volumes for 22bra, 22brx and 22 Dasher?

Cheers

How about the 22GT,just a little longer than the Dasher and should work out nicely with the Alpha brass, check out the picture of the 6GT over in the 6BR and 6BR improved section.

Matt, thank you! This looks like a very promising option.

Wonder if Alpha will produce a few 6GT brass with 22GT headstamp that one can neck down to 22? Any idea on the case volume?

I'd opt a 22X47 Lapua or the 22 Nosler if you're looking to experiment a bit. The 22-250AI still delivers the mail, though. -Al

22 Dasher should do that. Barrel life might be a little longer than the 22-250 If you keep pressure reasonable and choose slow, cool powders

With our penchant to experiment, I really like the PBike neck redux kit - a la Skip Otto. It can be fun to see what can be squished, trimmed and whomped up.
Note: a longer neck seems to truly help w throat wear......trust me. We did a long neck XC (almost .400) and it was 800 rds w less than .001" throat wear and shooting zeroes and ones to that point, 3200 fps & 107s, with an XCaliber bbl.

With the above in mind, maybe revisit the 22-250 as the parent case - if not wanting to do srp. Trimming is trimming, whether. 050 or .175 is removed (Harbor Freight chop saw) and plenty of good large primer brass to be had. Justa thought.

22 BR appears to already do those velocities (see the other current 22BR thread posted just recently). 22 BRA would be even more. My 223A will do almost 3100 I would guess a 22BR would be well into 3300 FPS.

I get the same speed with my 6BR with the same weight bullets that I sused to get with the 22-250 getting all I could get.

Evan, that is what I did with my 22-250 AI. Used 40.7gr N160 behind a 80gr ELD M with HBN bullet at 3200 fps in 31” barrel at about 47k psi. What I’m looking for is to replicate that with case with a longer neck and less powder.

I would like a longer neck than my Dasher has. I hadn’t even considered the throat erosion angle. I suppose if you’re ordering a reamer, you can place the bullet where you like it. I sort of ended up living with the reamer my smith ordered. Those speeds shoud be easy to get from a Dasher.

Just built a 22BRA, so far I’m happy with it. Just about done fireforming and I’ll work up some loads. Burning up some H380 but 30gr gives me 2940 with the 88elds. JamesTN was getting just over 3200 with his 80gr so that’s right in there.

Thank MTSLW, what barrel are you using and length? Have you dine any Quickload calibrations and would you mind sharing the H2O case volume if you have measured it?

300S -

Howdy !

I wildcatted .35Remington down to .224” cal, for varmint/target use.

Case capacity was between that of a stock .22-250’, and a .22-250AI.
Case oal is 1.920”..... same as the Creedmoor, which it pre-dates by
a few decades.

The heaviest bullets I shot ( groundhogs and target work ) was Hornady 75”A”- Max. I opted for best accuracy along w/ useable energy.

40.5gr AA3100 and FED Large Rifle Match gave me 3,420 from a 28”
5 groove 1-8 . Primer change to FED Large Magnum Rifle Match boosted vel to 3,500...... w/ small opening up of groups. Again, these were not max vel loads. I did not shoot any bullets heavier than the 75”A”-Max.

.22-35 utilized an easy-to-form 26* shoulder angle, and .250” neck lg.
I used Remington-brand .35 Rem brass exclusively, and formed using a
RCBS Custom case forming die set. They also made the initial FL size and bullet seater dies.

I had no failures to feed or extract. W/ .22-35.... whether it be fired cases or unfired cartridges. My Wichita WBR1375 action was operated w/ a stock .308 bolt face, and M-16 style extractor.

Another .224” cal wildcat I had provisionally case formed is designed to fit a chamber cut by running a .22-6mm Remington reamer in “ short”; for a nominal .466” base diam.

Amongst this projects goal were: case forming using a stock case forming
die ( non-custom ), ability to load/ re-load cases using non- custom dies; and the ability to chamber a rifle for this wildcat using an existing reamer run in short ( no custom readers ). I case form using a stock (Lee ) 6.5x55 Swedish FL die w/ internals removed to allow excess brass to extrude out top of the open-topped die.

After cut-off for length, I detail trim to desired case oal,and inside neck ream/outside neck turn to arrive @ final calibre and neck wall thickness
desired.

I used Hornady dies set-up for 6mm Remington... swapping in a .224” cal seater stem; and appropriate diam neck size bushing ( for .224” cal wildcat ) in their shoulder bump/ bushing NS die.

.22-6mm Remington. (” .22 Texas Trophy Hunter “) readers can be rented.

The above .224” cal wildcat has case capacity of 49.8gr H2O, and a
.301” lg neck; along w/ a 26* shoulder angle. This would help keep the powder combustion “ turbulence point” inside the neck, to aid barrel life.

I formed sample cases using Norma 7x64 Brenneke brass, which has the required .466” base diam. 7x64 is a rimless case, and is .308 bolt face compatible; along w/ being LR primed.
