22BR vs 22ppc

Its a $1.00 a piece for 22ppc ,Seems like neck turning is required for the 22 BR . Just burned up a bbl in 22/250 now thinking of 22BR or 22ppc . What's best for long bbl life and varmint shooting out to 400 yds ? I don't much care for neck turning

If your rifle was previously chambered for 22-250 then it will have the correct bolt face for the BR so between those two the 22BR makes more sense.

A 22PPC uses slightly less powder than a 22BR. It has a smaller case. For the same twist barrel and same bullets barrel life would be expected to be a little better with the 22PPC.

A PPC would require more brass work if you use 220 Russian brass. I think someone (Norma?) makes 22PPC brass now. If you (can) buy 22PPC brass you would not need to turn the necks.

If you are looking for barrel life, a 6BR would be a better choice than a 22BR.

For any two bullets of the same weight and materials/construction, you would expect to be able to run a slower twist in a 6BR than a 22BR because the bullet would be shorter. You would expect a slower twist barrel to last longer.

For a faster twist you will run into pressure limitations at a lower velocity.

A 22BR would be fun at 400 yards. A 6BR would probably do better in the wind.

How about a 22AR? Or 224 LBC, or 22 Grendel... All the same cartridge and smack in the middle of those two options. A pretty simple two bushing sizing down of the 6.5 Grendel and go shoot. Cheaper brass and nipping on the heals of the 22 BR, with the PPC bolt face.

You have a BR bolt head. you would have to add a sako extractor to you bolt for the PPC. Have you thought of a 6BR shooting 70 gr bullets. 6BR is has better barrel life. If not go with the 22BR.

Your current action limits you to a 308 boltface(22 BR's). A PPC requires a slightly smaller boltface, thus a new action, and most are not cheap.. A 22 BR with a 12 twist barrel will shoot a 60-64 gr bullet to your desired range and beyond. A 14 twist will push 50-55 gr bullets very close to 22-250 velocity with less powder and much longer barrel life. Have it chambered as a no turn neck, and you will not be disappointed.

Ironworker doesn't say what action he has but should not be a problem to get just a bolt for most actions.

That being said, a 22BR makes the most sense among 22 calibers because you could use the same bolt and a 6BR would be even better.

I have a 22br and a 6br both with 14 twist to push 55gn fast. If I had to choose one, it would be difficult. Don’t have to neck turn eaither.

I have 22BR w a no turn neck .253". very accurate & fast...
Does take some work to form the brass, and in my case, trim to .1520", & I inside ream...

Good suggestion to try the 6BR earlier. Load & go, great varmint cartridge. def worth considering.

Zero freebore 6BR with a 12 to 14 twist. So you can jam the 55s. Should be very close to the best 22-250 velocity with a MUCH better barrel life. Like twice.

22 BR. or a 14 Twist 6br. And if you need any brass for either, let me know I have quite a few pieces of brass that are past their prime for competition, but still have minute of Varmint accuacy.WD
