22BR varmint bullet

i recently picked up an XP-100 in 22BR. It has a 1-14 twist 15 3/4in barrel on it and I’d like to use it for varmints.

I was thinking about using 40gr VMax bullets with it. Anyone with experience think there’s a better choice of bullet? I’ll be in Ohio so I can have close and long shots

The 40 V-max is a great varmint bullet in my .22BR. Will expand at most any distance and very, very accurate. Varmints will not be very happy!

I've always gravitated to the 55 grain varmint bullets in the 12 & 14 twist rifles. They just seem to hit harder and do more damage to the target (ground hogs & foxes) out past 200 yards. It hasn't made too much difference in brand, Vmax, Ballistic Tip, Blitz Kings all have shot good and expanded as they should. If you are shooting at a velocity below 3600 fps, then the old style Hornady SX or Sierra Blitz would give results similar to a higher velocity cartridge.

I've had no issue with either the 40 VMax or the 53 Vmax in terms of terminal performance, so I would try a sample of both of those to see what you like better or if there is any big difference at all.

Both of them do what you expect at distances that make sense for those bullets at their respective speeds. I've also been lucky in terms of barrels that like them.

You probably owe it to yourself to play with all the other brands at some point.

In my own life, I factor in being able to get them when I need them, as well as the likelihood they will perform well. In recent years, I have to give credit to Hornady for making their stuff available and keeping their prices down, compared to the others who were either difficult to find or exorbitant in their pricing.

I will say Hornady is not my first choice for match bullets, but their price on Varmit bullets and availability is very nice, I ended up picking up some 40 grain and 55 grain for $.16 a piece

Any of the tipped bullets do well Blitzkings, V-Max, ballistic tips. Also, the Sierra SPT and SBT bullets are lethal, link below to the 50 grain SPT. As far as 14 twist goes you should be able to shoot at least up to 55 grain, I shoot a lot of 50 grain bullets in my 22 BR. Fun cartridge, enjoy!
