22BR questions

welcome to the 22 BR world! i shoot two of them...paper , grapefruits and varmints and they perform wonderfully on them all. primers: cci 450s seat just a few thous below the pocket's edge and this is normal and desired. one step necking down the lapua 6mmBR brass can introduce a donut at the neck's base and is of no consequence unless you seat a bullet through the neck. trimming: measure the case length and if they are all within .002 i'd wait and trim if the difference increases. you can measure the chamber's length with a sinclair chamber length plug and know just how much space you have in fromt of the case mouth. you will have fun!
Outstanding no BS post. Later! Frank

a trick i learned from this site: if you have a redding 22 BR competition bullet seater, turn it all he way down, then run a 6 mm lapua into the die. the neck is sized almost to the neck/shoulder (lube neck and polishing the inside of the die helps). now bring the neck down below neck chamber diameter with a form/trim die or bushing. i still get a little donut but i don't seat that low. i neck turned on my first 22 BR, which was not necessary as neck clearance is adequate. lapua brass is so unifom i'm not convinced turning benefits accuracy.

I agree this would work except in one of the rifles I picked up it has a .246 neck which would end up too tight. That is another reason to do a chamber cast to find out the diameter of the chamber neck if you're not sure of that dimension.
