22br or .22-250 in a 14 twist?

(I post this before I saw the almost exact same question below, Sorry guys!)

I was wondering around the shop the last few days scrounging up parts for a "scrap" build. I found a really nice looking factory Rem .22-250 heavy barrel and scoped it to determine condition. I also found an old military mauser action sitting around with an OK timney style trigger.

I know this thing won't be a barn burner, but I'm wondering what would be better to go with the .22-250 or the 22br with a 14 twist? I've had several 250's just thinking a 22 br would be neat. I have both reamers so the only issue is choosing. Is there any reason not to go with the BR with a 14 twist?

I was reading up on this site that most of the BR shoot good in the 50-60 gr bullet class. I know the 14 may or may not stabilize those heavier 55 and up's but ether way, I guess I don't have much to loose!

Howdy !

I started out center-frie varminting w/ 2ea custom .2-250s. One was from P.O. Ackleys shop, and the other by 1950's NW Ohio gunsmith C.L. Meracle.

I graduated to a larger-capacity .224" cal wildcat, which I used for groundhogs and paper shoots.
* Thereafter, I tried a Fred Sinclair-smithed .22BR.....

The .22BR was on a Wichita "MINI", w/ a 220" Hart SS w/ BR taper.

My experience: While accurate, the .22BR was obviously " down on power", compared to either
the .22-250s I had; or my .224" cal wildcat. We shot both Hornady 50 and 55SX bullets.

I never really got into benchrest shooting, and ended up having Sinclair swap the barrel over to a Ruger
M-77 ( formerly.... in .250 Savage, sporter wt ). The Ruger, my buddy shot along side me; while I shot my .224" cal wildcat at groundhogs. He too, came the smae conclusion as stated above.
Also, the .22BR did not have the "death ray" type of killing power, that even the original .250 Savage shooting Sierra 75HP's had.

My buddy moved on to using a Savage 112V .20 Swift, and was much happier & more successfull with it.
Then to a 6mm Rem 700BDL, then on to a custom 6mmAI.

During the next 35+ yr, my shooting buddy got heavily into bench rest, so had/has a lot of 6PPC time.
This year, he wanted to get more back into groundhog shooting, after popping the occasional 'hog
w/ his off-time 6PPCs.

He came to the conclusion that 6PPC worked, but was not ideal for his varminting needs.
So... he bought a used M700BDL varmint wt in .22-250.

I shot my .224" cal wildcat during the same period, and never missed that .22 BR.

That's how it went.... for us.

.22BR is useable on varmint, but .....it's not like there'll be an excess amount of KE on-hand.

nothing wrong with a 22-250 for hogs or deer under the right conditions for the latter. i have a very good friend and customer he has shot hogs for many years with all kinds of cal. i cannot get him to give up the 22Br i built him four years ago . i just re-barreled in 22br again he shot the first barrel out i think he mentioned about 3300rds . still shoots 1.5 at 400yds. but that was not quite good enough for him . he shoots a-max yes a-max not v-max 52gr. now most of his shots are held to 400yds. and under on hogs but he does shoot at paper to 500yds. if you are planning on shooting 400yds and beyond 220 swift or 22-250 ackley would be my choice. hope this helps . T.R.
