22BR headspace question

I have a 22BR barrel that when checked for headspace with a 6BR headspace gage is a little more than tight. This got me thinking that my assumption that the 22BR and 6BR have the same headspace measurement may not be accurate. After checking the drawings for both cartridges, I saw no measurement that should preclude the use of a 6BR gage in a 22BR. I'm not an expert on the 22BR, and it is a Savage type barrel, so I can set the headspace pretty easily, but does anyone have any thoughts on this?

My plan is to take another series of measurements and then re-headspace if I still don't see any problems. I appreciate all the help and know how from you guys. Thanks.

A 22, 6, 7, 30 BR all use the same gauge. There may be some difference in gauges between manufacturers, or even with the same manufacturer, but any should be within a thousand's or so.

newguy,

Do you have the no-go gage, too? I have a barrel nut Shilen DGV and set the barrel with the go-gage, making sure the bolt closes cleanly (no firing pin). Then I put the no-go gage in and the bolt closes 1/2 way before stopping if I got it right. Then, I check it again, then with the go-gage in the chamber, I tighten the nut wrench with a "whack" or two; then check everything again. All told, it's about a 20 minute process.

I appreciate the help. I am good on setting the headspace. I have a passel of Savages and one Shilen DGV. I was just expecting the headspace on the one I bought to be correct, and it is a little tight, which made me question my assumption that all BR cases headspaced the same. I will just re-headspace it with the gage that I have. I already have the rifle apart now, and was looking around anyway. Thanks again for the assist.

Another possibility is that the original head space wasn't set using a head space gauge but rather a fired or unfired case. Re-set your HS with the gauge. It's the right way to do this ;)
