22BR and 6BR magazine kit poll.....

How many people here would be interested in a kit that converts Accuracy International magazines to feed the 22 and 6 BR cartridges?

I have been able to successfully do it in my 22BR with a 10 round AI mag by using a spacer, modified anti tilt follower and a spring from a different application. It works really well and I dont think it would take much to get a professionally made kit IF we could convince someone like CDI to produce it for us. I was able to also get it to work by modifying a Rem 223 follower and spring to fit a 5 shot AI mag. BUT both took alot of cut and try.

Lets see if I can post pics of it....

2dogs,

Count me in. I've got a switch barrel .308/243AI/6x47/22br that would love a kit to modify the AI Mag. Personally, I'd prefer a 5 shot magazine conversion.

Thanks guys, but we will have to drum up some more interest if we are going to get somebody to produce a nice kit for us. I have the prototypes but I appreciate your helping me gather interest on this thread so can keep this alive.

2 dogs,

What did you pull the spring from? I have a good machine shop close, and if I can source the spring, I bet the rest would be pretty easy to source.

I am looking to build a new varmint rifle in 243 but if this can go through the hoops and be done it will be a 6br. for sure. So count me in to.

Just to revisit this thread a little, I did some more work with a AI 223 magazine and got it working pretty good in my 22 BR. Not flawlessly, but pretty good. I think with a little fine tuning I believe it would work out pretty good.

Still all in all, if you dont want to go through all this trouble, a 223 AI might be a better option. Its pretty close ballistically and mine are quite accurate as well.

.

I think there is enough market out there if anyone can develop a very good magazine for 6mmBR, that can be installed on Remington actions. If it fits AICS DBM, than it would be a home run.

I tried the Mike Bryant modification, with no success. My goal was to have 4 rounds of 30BR with heavy bullets (at 155 to 175gr.) to feed, but after lots of hours, I could not get it to work well.

In fact, the Wyatt magazine box that my Stiller Predator came works with the 30BR, but only about 70% of the time. Way better than the Bryant mod I tried.

Guys it is an easy thing to covert. I use a standard AI .308 5 round mag. Cut about .500 off the front of the follower and put a shim that is .375 thick in the front of the mag. The shim runs top to bottom of the mag in the front. The shim i made is out of UHMW. It required a little sanding and rounding of the follower so it didn't hang up. If you were to cut any more off the follower you would run into the spring. I used this mag at first with out even fastening the shim. It gets trapped between the mag and action. Make sure it doesn't bind. After i found that it worked i used a rivet to hold it in place so during mag changes it didn't fall out. i have used this very successfully with 87 gr vmax and 105 bergers

Bert,

For a 6br I'm sure this would work as you've noted, however I'm skeptical that it would work well for a .22br with 50 gr bullets...IMHO to work well for all 6BR based cartridges, the feed lips need to come forward about .25 inches.

Can you post a pic of your mag?

A 50 gr bullet is going to be very short. And yes i would agree that it would be great if the feed lips were longer. If you PM me your email i will gladly send you pics. Nothing special about what i did but they do work very well. I run the 105 bergers and the 87 gr vmax Also the 80 gr berger varmint. All work flawless after some tuning. Once i fig out what i needed on the first mag just copied it on the next two and they work. Glad to help anyone who has any questions. I have also thought of the mod .223 mag that looks like it might be the way to go for the .22 br.
