.224AR, Who shoots one?

Phil

Ok, who has a. 224 AR and what bullet are you shooting in it? ???

I'm thinking that this might be the cats pajamas with the 69gr. Sierra tipped match king.

What weight bullets are you guys using, and what are you seeing for velocities? ??

Barrel lengths? ??

Phil.

Not sure I understand your question. The bullets I use to reload for my AR are marked .224. I have tried 69 MK's in mine, but they are not the best shooting bullet in my rifle.. The ones I used are the HP's. Haven't seen the tipped version around here. Your rifle may shoot em just fine.. I have read that many others love em [HP version]. My advice is that you buy a box and try em.

My best load is with 65 Sierra'sand W748. Adams Arms 16" barrel 1:7 twist

My other upper was a 20" DPMS, 1" stainless bull barrel. 1:9 twist. It was almost a 1 hole shooter using 50 grain Vmax and TAC

I guess i should have clarified my initial post.

The .224 AR is a 6.5 Grendel case necked down to .224

My thought is that since it is a shorter, fatter case than the .223 that the Grendel case will allow me to shoot the 69TMK at magazine length without taking up powder capacity while also enjoying the added case capacity of the Grendel.

I`m thinking about a fast calling gun on an AR platform.....

I have never had a .224AR chambered rifle, but I'm thinking the case capacity should be between a 22PPC and 22BR - with the PPC sized case head. Does that sound about right?? Sounds like a sweet round.

....and my favorite mag, PRI 6.8 .

Spook.

What kind of performance are you getting with the 80 Amax????

I`m assuming that picture is a 6.5 Grendel necked to .22....

I`m really interested in any info you care to share about it, PM me if necessary....

Thanks,

Phil.

I shoot the 80amax in mine as well. I got it to shoot the heavies at a good velocity from a mag. I think the 69's, or anything made for mag length in a 5.56, will likely be too short. Once I run out of the amax I'll likely try the Nosler 80's. Berger and the Sierra 90's would be best, but they're twice as much as the amax/Nosler. Whitley's site has some good info.

sorry to revive an old thread, but are you guys still shooting your 224ARs? How do you feel about them now?

I'm thinking of making one for paper and maybe coyotes but I can't decide between the 22 and the 6mm. Get better ballistics from the 22 (drop) but I could also use the 6mm for deer. 22 bullets are also slightly cheaper and interchangeable with my 223.

What kind of velocity do you get with 80s? (and what barrel length)

Help the 224 Valkyrie become the factory standard short fat case 22

while the valkyrie has potential, it's still 150-250 behind the 224AR/ 22 grendel from stated factory ammunition claims of 2700 with 90 gr bullets. Robert Whitley says he can get somewhere around 2850-2950 with the 224ar. I think a lot of this comes down to the grendel case being wider. The Valkyrie is based on the 6.8 spc case but shorter to make room for the long 90 grainers. However, the spc case only compares to the grendel in case capcity when full sized. So shorter thinner case = less room for go juice(powder)
