224 Valkyrie bolt gun?

garandman

Bolt Gun Bodacious
I got one coming from Bugholes (Southern Precision) around late Sept - early Oct. 24" barrel on a Big Horn Origin action, Trigger Tech trigger. Going in an XLR chassis. Glass: likely another Athlon ETR.

For bullets:

Hornady 75 gr ELD-M
Hornady 88 gr ELD-M
SMK 77gr TMK

Berger has always worked well, so I'll grab some of them eventually.

What else do I need to be thinking about as I wait for the end of September?

PS: I have no interest in the AR platform for this gun.

I like everything I am seeing so far. What magazines? Will a standard 223 mag work on that?

There is a lady that shoots PRS in my neck of the woods with nearly your set up. Never asked or looked at her mags.

Put a brake on it.

I shoot a 223AI with 26" on an Origin in a Grayboe and I love it. 75gr ELDs. 4 port brake. Diamond trigger. Extremely fun to shoot and can be very competitive to around 800 yards. You are going to have a blast! Post pics and reports when you get it done.

Greg at Southern Precision is a great guy! Has built for me in the past. He’s a perfectionist for sure. The Valkyrie takes the 6.8 magazines if you’re gonna shoot the 90’s. I’ve got one on an
AR platform that shoots great. Thinking about a bolt gun build but would have to shoot F/Open with it. That’s what my 6.5X47L is for. Let us know how it shoots.

Im hoping 90s at 2800 fps and 75s at 3000 + ...

Just remember, and I’m sure you know, the fastest may not be the most accurate.

No at all...its a welcome reminder :)

In 223 and 6.5CM, I found a high and a low node. Hoping to fnd that here. My needs are simpe. All I really need is just under half MoA, and I'll be happy. :)

There doesn't seem to be alot of data for 224V in bolt guns, yet anyway...

In a longer (than AR-15) action, what is the advantage of Valkyrie over 223Rem (considering using "long enough" 223 mags)?

CFE223 will be one of the few powders to get there. It's not temp stable but that's not a big deal if you load it into strelok with a temp offset. If you overload you are going to know it in a hurry so you will be able to set your limits.

Again you will love this project, so much bang for your buck it should be illegal.

Mag length doesn't limit your loads. Max AR mag length (2.280" ish) pushes the bullet way down into the case mouth, limiting the powder load. 224V cartridges are in the 2.300 + range. 224V also has a larger case volume.

Yes, I get it with limited mag length. But in 700 footprint with say- an opened up 223 accumag magazine (2.56 inch plus coal), one can get the 80gr eld with the boattail at shoulder/neck junction (not robbing case volume with bullet base) with room to spare.

I compared case volume of a Valkyrie from 2 different spent brass from guy shooting a factory AR in front of me (likely a loose chamber) to volume from my 223 bolt gun (has tight match chamber) weighing water (volume) filled to the top of the neck. Valkyrie averaged 31.5gr water and the 223 average 30.9gr water. The longer neck on the Valkyrie likely makes up for about half of that difference (if you have reamer spec'd for bullet you want, you'll likely seat near shoulder/neck junction). Just saying, actual case volume is very similar.

In an AR (or any limited magazine I length rifle), totally understand. Just trying to see if I'm missing anything in a bolt?

It's a cool build either way, and would be a fun project!

Nah, I'd say you got it. :) This especially becomes a problem with any ELD / TMK "tipped" bullet, or anything longer than 77SMK's. They just are too cramped in even your longest AR mag in your standard AR magwell.

My build is gonna be a Rem 700 short action platform, so I shold be good to 2.350" or even longer. (The MDT mags have a modded follower / mag body. (I'll try to post a pic later)

You need to take the time to read his case volume findings and be sure to note that there is very little difference in the valkyrie and the 223. I did the same measurement and came out with similar results. There is probably about half to less than a grain difference in the 223 vs 22 valkyrie.
Just don't expect to see phenominal results over a 223. I think the OP is pretty well grounded but I have heard many people claim the 224V has lots more case volume and that's not the case.

The case volume is similar, cus the 224V is fatter but shorter. I would suggest that misses the point.

In an AR mag you gotta opush the bullet WAAAYYY down into the case.

Here's the MDT 224 V mag, which will allow a 2.500" bullet. (compared to a 2.280" from an AR Mag.)

Here's the 88 gr ELD - M cartridge and bullet... note how far the bullet in AR mag length extends down into the case, limiting your load / compressing powder... also note how close to the bullet ogive is to the case mouth to fit an AR mag... that problem is even worse with Bergers. I think the 224 V is *begging* for a platform longer than the AR15,

Sorry.... I haven't yet figgered how to size pics. :(

I also fitted the MPA EVG grip to the XLR chassis.

The MPA grip has to be milled a bit to get rid of the "ridge" around the back and side of teh grip, and the inside of the raised finger rest.
