.224 bullet for 22-243 improved for deer hunt

After trying a number of different wildcats for loooong range PD shooting in Wyoming, I settled on a 22/243 Improved (30 degree shoulder). Used a Panda action with a 31" Kreiger barrel (7.7 twist). The set-up was a tack-driver to 1200 yds with the Hornady 75 gr ELD bullet (3640 fps with RL22). Had 100 yd groups under .1" and 1000 yds groups of under 3" (pictures two and three).

Only drawback is a barrel life of 800 rds if one was lucky!

I used a 22-250 shooting 55gr for over 10 yrs. It was my only rifle back then. And would guess I shot 15 to 18 bucks and lots of does with no problems. My kids grew up shooting either a 22-250 or a 223 depending on the child and I loaded up 55 gr for them also. I wouldn't know how many deer were shot with the Remington 788 22-250 I have, I will just say alot.

If you shoot them right behind the shoulder, there dead in 100 yds. A head or neck shot and there dead right there.
Thanks for the rep;y, hot 22 cailber rifles are my favorites I'm 84 years old now and I've always had a 22-250 or 220 swift ect.

Bought some 77 gr tipped matchkings. Surprised to learn they are popular for hunting after some google and youtube searches. Looks good. I just loaded up a 5 shot powder charge ladder to get an idea of where they will come in at for speed based on my 69gr load. Looks like 3650-3660ish fps. Didnt seem to have any pressure signs but quickload says it should be up there so i will stop there, thats plenty fast enough. And bullet was seated basically full jam, all 5 went into less than a nickel, closer to a dime. The gun shoots well. So we shall see. Do some seaters and powder tweaks and see where it ends up at it.
