How fast can i push a 75gr. Amax bullet before it comes apart?????

8 twist barrel...

Phil -

I 've had them @ 3,500; and they did just fine.
Never gave a thought to them possibly coming apart.

I've driven 55SX to 3,690fps; and they did fine ( that was WELL past Hornadys stated vel limit )

I don't understand the physics behind it but I've has a 50gr. sierra BK out of a 22-250AI come apart at 120yrds. I was testing load at 100yrds. and got a load I liked then went hunting. I missed 2 yotes one at 140yrds. the other at 200yrds. close enough that I should of hit both. went back to my target and placed it at 200yrds. and there was no bullet. i finally figured out that it was blowing up at about 120yrds. so if ur pushing fast and you're worried about it don't forget to check and make sure the bullet is staying together at the distances you plan on shooting. I don't understand why it wasnt blowing up at say 10yrds.or 20yrds. but it held together till 120yrds.

That is interesting. I have seen many different rifle and bullet combos that would blow up bullets and it is amazing that they all seemed to go up in smoke at about 30 or 40 yards.

To the best of my knowledge it is a combination of things...

Twist/Velocity/Jacket thickness and Throat erosion.

Twist and velocity work on the rotational force of the bullet, with an excess of either trying to tear the bullet apart, both working in unison exaggerates this effect.

The thinner the jacket the easier the first two can accomplist this.

Throat erosion adds it`s two cents by damaging the jacket, then good old twist/velocity do thier thing.

I am in NO WAY a ballistician, nor do i claim to have a grip on this topic, this is ONLY what i have gathered from discussions on this topic.

PLEASE correct me if i have in ANY way mucked this up...

Phil.

I have a friend that pushes them to 3500 from a Clark and has no problems except for flying rockchucks. ;D At this speed they are bombs.

I've pushed them reliably to 4950 fps with my 22-338Lapua Ackley rail gun.
