.223Rem w/ Varget: best primer?

Greetings fellas. I get low SD/ES numbers with N140 and wolf primers, but I'm getting better velocity with Varget & H4895.
The wolves and the Varget are not agreeing.

So has any one found what primer gives the very lowest with sd's with varget in .223?

Thanks,
Tres

A lot of highpower competitors have been using CCI-BR4 with Varget. I don't know how the velocity/standard deviation runs with this combo but accuracy is good. I have also had good accuracy using Remington 7 1/2 benchrest primers.

I've have used Fed. Match, CCI BR-4's and Rem. 7 1/2's with Varget, R-15 and N-135 with out any true stand outs. I have noticed that with heavier bullets,77-90gr) the Fed's shine with Varget. I have wanted to try the WOLF Small Rifle Magnums, but I have to wait, I'm not paying $100/1000 for them.

I knew keeping records would come in handy for something.
My most accurate 223 load using Varget, was on 4/9/05
the load was 69g SMK with 25.5g of Varget and CCI BR4 primers, this load cronyed at 2994 fps with an ES of 25.99 and a SD of 9.11 and it shot a .187 for 3 at 100 yds.

Other similar 69g/Varget loads had 2963 fps, ES of 28.29 and SD of 14.52.
For lighter bullets, I have the following info. 52g SMK with 26.0g of IMR 4895 and BR-4 at 3239. FPS and ES of 56.24 and SD of 21.07 avg for 10 rounds.

I use only BR-4s and CCI-450 primers, in my 223s, 6BR, and 22BR and CCIs and Fed GM-210s in my 308s, and have never had an issue with this CCI/Varget combo in over 6000 rounds.
Hope this helps. Im a big fan of Varget.
Mike.

I have found Wolf small rifle mag primers to be excellent with Varget in 20br,6mmbr, and 6.5x47. I have tried Fed 205m,CCI 450, CCI 400,Rem 7.5 and WSR. The Wolfs will get me in the single digit sd and es in all 3 of these cal. and the groups will tighten right up!

I have had great accuracy with CCI-BR4's and 25.3 grs Varget with the Sierra 69 gr MK from my Bushmaster AR 1-n-9 twist 223 Rem. I have some Wolf SR mag primers but have not had time to do much with them.

Malcarjeb: If just switching to Wolf primers will get your ESs into single digits, I guess I best start using them.
I thought mine were high, until I checked some Factory Fed. GMM and they were running over 88.0 for ESs.
M.
