223ai First time out

I finally got to shoot my 223ai rifle. This rifle has a Green Mountain Barrel that is 25" long 9twist that i used a Dave Manson reamer to chamber.
My first 2 5 shot groups, fire forming some American Eagle 55gr Walmart bullets was 1" at 100 yrds.
Pretty impressed with the results.
Now i need to make some reloads and give them a try.

I have also been forming brass for my 223AI this summer. I have killed 199 groundhogs so far this year and probably 75-80 have been with ff loads. If a GH pops up inside of 300 yds I form another piece of brass. My barrel is an 8 twist CBI @ 24" and I am using 8208 and 50 vmax for my ff loads, best group with ff loads is a 5 shot dime size group @ 200 yds. Once formed I am using 53 vmax with 8208. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine, its a fun little cartridge. Longest kill so far 650 yd. with 53 vmax.

Not sure if the .223AI will work like my .22-250AI but my FF loads will shoot 5/16" groups out of a TC Encore with a Bullberry 16 1/4" bull barrel. I thought I was going to have to waste time and money fireforming but the FF loads are very accurate.

I shoot Hornady 55gr VMAX over AA 2015BR.

Nice when a plan comes together ain't it!

I would also have to say I loves me some 223 AI. I have 3, 2 1:14 twist's that burn the 40 grainers out at 4000 plus fps and are just devastating on prairie dogs. My other one is a 27" 1:8 twist. I would have to check but I think that one runs the 53 V Max at 3725 fps with excellent accuracy. I have a 4th one in the works, a 1/9 twist that I am going to cut short and run with a suppressor as a "do it all" 223 AI. All of my rifles shoot fireform ammunition as accurately as the formed cases. Good stuff.

depending on your target of course...but..

53 V max & Benchmark or H4895...or.........

223 AI isn't fussy......

Dogbuster, I am totally in agreement. I might even point out the 53 V Max is a better killer than people might think. My hunting partner has 50+ hogs with as many shots with 53 grain V Max. factory loads !

I LIKED THESE LITTLE RAT SO GOOD I BUILT ME TWO OF THEM :D:p:D

I tried that same idea with my wife, but it didn't go over so good....speakin' of horses, how does the 223AI feed out of a box magazine??? Such as the Ruger American or maybe aftermarket stuff like the H.S. Precision bottom metal????

ALL OF MINE ARE SINGLE SHOT BOLT GUNS BUT I M SURE THEY WOULD FEED FINE BUT I'VE NEVER TRIED ONE FROM A MAG BOX

All of mine feed perfectly. REM 700s with AI magazines. Be sure your mag is set up to sit as high as possible. I can wipe out a mound in a very short time.

Thanks for the info...I have always preferred mags with the 700.

CDI bottom metal is just excellent. They will inlet your stock for like 60 bucks and have it back to you in a jiffy. I have something like 10. The last one they did for my Savage 223AI. They sent me a new 10 shot 223 mag that looks some stouter than the AI mags and works great.
