223AI Chamber

I am rebarreling my Rem. 700 SPS 223 to 223AI 1-8 twist. Will use 75 Amax and 62 Barnes - once in a while light varmint bullets if I can. I have been told to get the chamber cut 2.450 for the 75 Amax bullet - however I am wondering whether light bullets like 40's and 50's would have way too much jump in a 2.450 chamber. If I cannot use light bullets it will not kill the deal - this is going to be a deer gun/ fun target gun. Would I lose much velocity with a 22 inch barrel over say a 26? I have a 280AI so have some experience fire forming etc. however I would like to get this done right the first time. Any suggestions you guys have will be appreciated.

I have a 8 tw 223AI on my Savage Criterion Barrels http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,36262.0.html from Northland shooter supply. I am not sure about the throat length. You could check with them. But, mine will seat and shoot the light bullet very well.

I have a new .223AI that will be done any day based on a 28 inch HV profile Brux 8 twist barrel set up for 75 A-Max bullets, I don't know the freebore or length of chamber but could make a call tomm. to my smith to find out. I would think you would be fine shooting lighter bullets with a little jump of up to .050-.070 jump. Also go with a 26 inch barrel minimum to get your speed up.

Mark, i don't want to hijack GuyGP's thread, but how do you like the Criterion prefit barrel overall?

I am getting 3100fps with 70gr barnes tsx in my 8 twist 22inch. Not sure on the lighter bullets, I don't shoot them with this settup.

I have read on the forum that there could be problem when using a Rem 700 in rapid fire, something about angle of the shoulder of the 223A1 case not feeding when cycling the bolt. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the .223 cases. I have a .233 built by Accuracy Speakes which uses a shorter throat of 2.442. Even with the shorter throat, I can shoot 80's SMKs. Check with Accuracy Speaks.

Your seating depth of 2.450 will work great for the 75 amax and a 55 gr Vmax will still touch the lands with plenty of bullet in the neck!

40x guy,

The Criterion prefit barrel is great. It is as accurate as my SSS Douglas barrel in 20 TAC.
