223Ack and 80gr?

What would a reasonable speed out of 223 Ackley out of a 26" barrel be with 80 gr bullets be versus a standard 223?

std 223 over a 223 AI is approx 150-200 fps using 50-55s.......

sooo........wild guess.......additional 150.........with correct twist of course.......

7 or 8 twist.......

It's an 8" twist. I have dies and reamers for both. I also have throating reamers so I can optimize the free bore. We shoot a steel match out to 650 yards. There's a slim possibility I might want to shoot FTR with if but if going Ackley makes it enough better for the steel match I'll go that way. I have enough F rifles...

Ackley version not "legal" for true F T/R. I made an ackley in an open rifle for the juniors in our area to shoot, shoots great!

So how close would you think my guestimate of 2800 be ?
Anyone?
Depends on how hard you want to run it.
I know it's not what you are asking about but I used to shoot a lot of 75 amax which have a long bearing surface quite a bit faster then that with a 24" barrel.
Edit.... 2800 isn't out of line with the parent cartridge

I know, that's my dilemma. Optimize it for the steel match only or set it up for both steel and TR.

Shawn, I'm fireforming with 75Amaxs & TAC, gettting 3015 from a 26" barrel. Reckon stepping up to an 80 would shave maybe 100fps, give or take?

I'm a tad over 3100 fps with the 80 grain A-Max using Varget in formed cases from a 26" 8tw Criterion. Magneto Speed and Pro Chrono confirm and case life has yet to be determined as I haven't loss one yet after 4 loadings after fire forming.

Of course this is throated accordingly....

I shoot 22-204's, which have a hair more capacity than the 223 AI, but for all practical purposes, is a twin.

My 22" barrels will run 3075 with 75 Bergers

My 24" barrels will run 3025 with 80 Bergers

My 26" barrel will run 3115 with 80 Bergers

My plain jane 223 runs 75's at 2900 in a 17 1/2" tube

My 30" 223ai with .100" freebore is most accurate at 25.0 Varget with a 80vld. 2925fps. I took it up to 25.7 where I found pressure. I'll have to check my book on my 22" done with the same reamer but it's high 2800s with the same charge.

Alf, what charges are you running? You're more in the speed range where I was hopin to be.

So it sounds like 2900-3100 fps depending on the what the gun likes. I'm good with that, thanks guys!

My lot of Varget seems to be a little on the slow side, plus I shoot moly plated bullets. I'll only say I'm a good couple grains higher than where you're at......;)

I HAVE 2 223 ACKLEY MY 7 TWIST LIKES VARGET BUT I DONT PUSH IT I'M ONLY PUSHING 90 VLD'S AT 2750 AND SOME GUYS CLAIM THEY GET THAT IN A REGULAR 223 REALLY LIKE THE 223 ACKLEYS GOOD LUCK:D:D

Fire forming mine at the moment with 24.0gn of 8208, an 80.5gn Berger, LC brass, cci-450's and seems to be shooting North of 2800 with a 22" 7tw. Its posting 1/4 moa groups with this recipe. One of my shooting partners is running the exact same set up, and his final load for formed brass is 25.2gn and chrono'd at 2990 from 22". He posted a 0.054" 5x shot group at 100yds with it not too long ago. Silly accurate and an absolute ball to shoot.

The load for my 25" 7.7 twist 223ai is 25.2gr varget, lapua brass, 80gr amax, 2910fps. On my 12th firing with the brass and pockets are still in good shape. I'll be rebarreling it soon back to straight 223 to shoot mid range f tr.
