.223 Wylde Chambering Opinions?

The Wylde chamber is an option to be considered for a multi-purpose AR. Unless you need a throat for the longest and heaviest bullets, it will work.

If I was building a varmint rifle, or pure short range benchrest 223; I'd go with a shorter freebore / throat for 55s and under. The Wylde chamber really shines 77gr and above, and generally does well with shorter jump tolerant bullets; but IMHO, you need eldms or 80gr+ to really get the Wylde benefit.

For an AR, no doubt it's a good chamber, but for a bolt and lighter bullets, maybe a standard chamber would be a better choice.

Have had a couple of barrels chambered in wylde for paddock rifles now. Accuracy is outstanding using 55s up to 80s . Both barrels were seconds time around. Both came from the same bloke as he only uses his barrels in fclass for 12 months then puts another barrel on. So chop remember and they just shoot. Wouldn't go back to a standed chamber in 223 ever I dnt think.

Wylde chamber was originally developed as a match chamber for 223. It shoots great from mag length to 75s seated at 2.4". If building an F/tr or Palma gun specifically for 80+ gr bullets, the Manson T.15 chamber is what I would do.

All of my .224 ARs are Wylde chambers. My first AR was a Frankenstein that a buddy of mine built for me over 20 years ago now. I had him do the lower as a service rifle because that's what I wanted to eventually get into (and I did), but the first upper had a 22" 1-8 Wilson barrel from Rock River with a Wylde chamber. I had no problems shooting 1/2" groups with it from the bench using 40gr and 50gr bullets with multiple powders. I took it with me on my first PD hunt a couple of years ago, and it did great out to 400 yds. As others have said, it also does great with heavier bullets as well. By the time I had purchased my 3rd upper, they all happened to have Wylde chambers so I just stuck with it. Even my cheap AR pistols have them, and they have no problems shooting MOA groups. They are probably capable of better accuracy than that, but being pistols, I'm limited to using 1x optics on them.
