223 Wylde bolt/75g ELDMs nailed

Loaded up 10 rounds to shoot a 10 shot group at 100 yards. Figured if it went 1 MOA or better I'd run with it. First 5 were a ragged hole, then had a couple stragglers, followed by the rest in the same hole. 8 shots went 1/2" with the lower right 2 making it .85" Velocity is 2975fps. I blame Hornady bullets. They aren't exactly match grade by match standards...I may give the 80.5 Berger a try and see how much more accurate/consistent they are. These 75g ELDMs have been pretty picky and touchy. But I can live with it for now I guess. Time to load up a 100 and get a good dope chart from 300-1200 going.

Congrats!
To me, the three shots outside of the central group look like shooter induced. Easy to get that spread from a slightly different head position/pressure or grip pressure.
Possibly. Could be any number of things really. Maybe just don't have the right bullet, charge, depth, primer, could've been me, but 3 times? I dont really think so...I'm pretty decent when it comes to bench shooting. I didn't call 1 bad shot, everything broke right where and when I wanted to. No wind, nice overcast 60 degrees. This is just a LR steel trainer rifle anyway, not like I'm trying to win national BR matches with it, but I would like to see it group just a little better than that. Being it's a 15# 223 with a HV Bartlein barrel.

I have had success with ELD-M in other calibers but the 75s I have never got to impress me. Not real sure what the problem is with them other than they may just be finicky. Just my experience.

Same here. Never had this type of trouble with the 6mm 108s in my 6 Creed or 7mm 180s in my 7-300 Win Mag. They both shot lights out (under 1/2 MOA) from the get go, and do it consistently. These 75s have been super picky since day 1.

I’m the same with my 223 8 twist. I want my rifle to love em but it don’t even like em

I had my mind set on them from the beginning of my build. Didn't want to shoot anything else. Bought 15 boxes. Went through a whole box and a half already just to get to this point. It's not horrible, not the greatest either. But it's decent enough for what I'm doing I think anyway. Anytime you can get 10 shots under MOA I'd say it's about good enough. Unless you're BR or F-class shooting.

By the way this is what 24.5 did with 10@100. Someone told me that 24.5 would be better based off what they saw in my previous work ups. I didn't really think so, but thought I'd see anyway. Slightly bigger overall, but still 10 right at 1 MOA. The vertical is pretty nasty also...Going with the 24.7 loadSnapchat-1601595314.jpg

How far off the lands are you setting them? I get about 3/4 moa @ 700 yards with them in a 223AI. Mine like to be 0.005 off the lands.

I set them at 10 off for initial testing and they were always doing the 2 and 1 thing. After a few different range trips with same results, I finally ran a seating depth test last week and found my rifle preferred them at about 25 off. Which was kinda odd for me because my other 2 rifles love them at 10 off, 6 creed/108s and 7-300/180s. Just figured the 223 wouldn't be much different at 10 off but it didn't like any of it from 5-20 off. All 2 and 1 out. 25 was definitely the sweet spot. Here's the seating depth test. 5 to 40 off20240422_115107.jpg

I've shot 1000s of 75 ELD with both Varget and H4895 in at least 7 or 8 223 26" bolt gun barrels over the past 5-6yrs.. every barrel has shot lights out with the 75 eld with both varget and h4895 with proper load development

Here's my Mullerworks 8 twist 26" varget and h4895 initial load testing.

Ya I've seen that numerous times over on the hide. I am not the only one who has had trouble getting these to shoot. And some guys just cant get them to shoot period. I hope you don't mean to assume I don't know how to properly work up a load, but I can assure you that's not the case. These are just a very picky bullet in my rifle. Very small window of where they seem to want to shoot well with charge and seating depth. Have you shot any 10 shot groups at 100? What do they look like? Cause all I'm seeing is 3 shot groups. I'd like to see what it does with 7 more.

Like I said, the first 6 here made a ragged hole, you can't really beat that. The next 4 opened it up to .85" with 8 going into .5" It's about as good as my rifle is going to do with them. Varget or H4895 isn't going to do much, if any better. I've already tried H4895 and while it shoots decent enough, I ultimately decided to go with N540 as H4895 is unobtainable, and N540 was shooting a little better and faster than H4895 anyway. And I don't care for Varget as everybody and their mom uses it, it's also a bit slower than I want. With all that said, I'm glad you haven't had any issues getting them to shoot in your rifles. Maybe I can talk you into trading me a box of that 223 lapua brass for a few boxes of these 75s now...

It’s funny all the local stores that salls reloading supplies the only Bullets they have on The shelves are Hornady wonder why that is?
Must be working those poor presses to death 24/7

I like Hornadys for what they are, but I know Sierra and Berger definitely makes a more accurate bullet. However, for what I'm doing I can get by with Hornadys. They have better BCs than the other 2 which ultimately equates to better downrange ballistics, ELDMs also kill better than the other 2 at LR, which is a huge plus for me because I use them for both LR hunting and LR targets. I don't want 2 different bullets and loads. Plus Hornadys are the right price these days haha. The others are kinda stupid expensive...

While I have not tried the new 75 ELD bullets I have shot many of the 75 A-max bullets. My rifles came alive with the bullets seated .010 to .015 into the rifling. Just a thought. Good luck.
