.223 varmint bullet?

The 77 gr. SMK would be a good bullet if your shooting atleast a 9" twist .223 throated for such a bullet. Most .223 are 12" twist and will maybe stabilize 60 gr. bullets. In a 12" twist .223 Rem the heaviest I would shoot is 55s.

WHERE YOU HIT THEM precludes bullet choice and velocity, not that bullet and velocity don't count for a lot! A coyote biting at its newly acquired "wound" makes no one warm and fuzzy. Drop-dead NOW requires extreme accuracy and a proper bullet at Point-of-Impact. MAXIMUM retained VELOCITY helps down all yote's at any given range. After watching many Videos regarding Coyote kills, I've decided that it ain't that simple. These videos simply make us hunters feel inferior afield, because exactly how many rounds did it take to complete a one-shot kill video? Never feel inferior since those videos INCLUDE MANY undisclosed missed shots and tail-hit yotes, especially at extended yardage. Keep to practicing at 300 yards or less, and get really comfortable with your rifle. Cliffy

Cliffy I could care less if a coyote bites at a bullet hole, as long as he isn't biting at a calf I'm happy. A coyote doesn't care if it injures a lamb or a calf. The only thing that bothers me about not making a one shot kill is wasting a bullet. To me a rifle is a tool that helps me on the farm to protect my stock and my property. If the way I operate is unethical than so be it. I don't care what you think. I don't make videos but maybe I should. I bet peta would have loved to see me finish off a trapped coyote Christmas morning using a claw hammer so I didn't wake the family. By the way there are plenty of primers here in Iowa.

Hi John W., we are starting to connect regarding evil Coyote loads. 55 grain bullets hold a slight edge over 50 grain fare. Nosler does manufacture the 55 grain Ballistic-Tipper for the very purpose we are so fervently discussing. At 200 yards, these are super coyote killers. I'm soon to test 300 yard results: drop versus remaining ft/lbs of killing energy. Perhaps, you are way ahead of me downrange, but I learn slowly and precisely. I give no round the benefit of doubt, .223 Remingtonwise. I'm not into occasional luck shots when recommending what works. Cliffy

Cliffy, how many coyoyes have you actually killed? I'll bet my estwing framing hammer has taken out more than you. I'm not sure how many footpounds of enegy it has but on a good day it goes halfway through there head. If you did half as much shooting as you did babeling and whining about primers you might be worth listening to. When I was in college I paid alot of bills with coyotes and coons and it wasn't luck, it was hard work and alot of hours on the ground. As far as bullet selection or anything else shooting related I will never agree with anything you say because you obviously don't have a clue. Most of your shooting happens on the keyboard. Do us all a favor and take up golf.

Thank you for your compassion John, I like to (babble) fuss over not having garnered any primers for about six months. You most probably have killed more coyotes than me, since I'm old and feeble and can't tolerate cold weather. I'm a fair weather killer of Yotes and Feral Hogs. Foot Pounds of energy are only supplanted by bullet construction and accuracy of a shot. I'm pretty accurate when my fingers aren't frozen. Cliffy

My typing occurs at 70 degrees, John, same as my handloading. No, don't feel sorry for my fingers since they probably have done far more than yours to date. Global warming should assist my ability to continue using my fingers for years to come, if you believe in global warming: I do. It's too cold today, in Michigan, to go to the nearby shooting range, so I spent my afternoon hours at the local YMCA. Regarding, accurate .223 Remington fare, I've loaded some fifty-five grain Berger HPBT Target bullets with 24.2 grains of Alliant RL-10x: Nothing special, just my usual, proven 200 yard practice load. Keep in touch. Cliff

You should get the YMCA to put in miniature golf so you can get ready for spring when the courses open. You could be the next tiger woods. As for how much your fingers have done, well lets just say I use a kleenex. Remember don't take your eye off the ball cliffy.

found guy in kentucky that makes his own. 53 gr bthp. very very good in my .223. and also very deadly on all game so far. i love them, best i shot so far. everyone here shoots them. a little hard to come by sometimes. you have to get them at the shoots in summerset. he cames regular, other than that they are great.

Hi JohnWayne, I TRY to stay on topic, and I'll try even harder. I try not to rant, but I'm me. Cliffy

That TRY stuff isn't working is it? Don't "try", just STOP blathering.

JohnWayne and Ackman, two big guns against a meager Cliffy somehow seems unfair, but I'll try to cope as I add more info encountered through shooting and handloading trials. Some how you guys have gone askew of this topic: .223 Varmint Bullets. To get us back-on-track, what's the fastest .223 Remington muzzle velocity you've ever observed via your chronograph? My top finding is 3965 fps. Cliffy

Guys I am still a fan of the 50 vmax both in 223 out of an AR and out of a 22-250. I haven't killed a pickup load of them with this bullet but the ones I have killed have been dead on impact. Shot placement might have been the reason. I like to get as much velocity as I can to give myself a point blank hold out to 300 yards as that is about the limit I have had to shoot while sitting and calling.
JohnWayne, I had thought that I was probably the only person in the world to ever kill a coyote with a hammer. Back in 1994 I whacked one with Hart framer. Way to go man.

LRPV, Elmer Kieth said it best, Efficiency be damned, its results we're after. Dead is dead, it doesn't matter if you use a hammer, a log chain, or a V-max. Use what you have, use it well, and use it often.

Point Blank Maximum Range occurs when a given bullet drops to 3" below line of sight. If one drops a bullet by hand, near a LEVEL muzzle at the same as a bullet is fired from the same muzzle, hitting the ground occurs at the same split second bulletwise. This is a direct response to gravitational force. The only way to defeat this natural phenominon is to aim high above level. Assuring a lob into the desired target far downrange. Three hundred-thirty-five yards is about as good as Point Blank gets even with hyper-magnums that kick your shoulder into the oblivion of numbness, hence flinch-afield. In otherwords, for rapid-fire on a dog-town use a .224" caliber, such as a .223 Remington. Because a (.243" caliber) .243 Winchester will make one's shoulder sore after a few hundred rounds in quick succession. Listen to others, if you don't believe. Cliffy
