223 to ????????

OK guys . . . I have a 223 700, the barrel is wore out! I am going to change it.

Here is the question.

I have a 243, 22-250, 270, 6x47L, 6.5x47L, several 308's!

The 223 barrel is wore out!

WHAT BARREL DO I WANT TO PUT ON MY 223 - 6PPC? or just stick with the 223?

Just wondering, I was leaning going with a McGowen 24" 1-9 twist 223.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Don't forget, the bolt face would have to altered for anything except a 222 case head. And there is always the possibility of feeding problems. That could be expensive.

Dennis, I was in the same situation a few years ago and turned it into a .22 PPC. It's been a great rifle (I should shoot it more often...). The brass is a lot better than .223 and I get the ballistics I was looking for without having to resort to excessive pressure loads as is always the case with a .223. I set it up as a no-turn neck and it's been great. The bolt face was opened up and since it's a single-shot, feeding was not an issue. Actually, the PPC feeds into the chamber from the loading ramp better than the .223 did.

The short action will limit your options. What are you using it for? Whether competition or live varmints, I would go with the 6mmBR.

it seems to me you have all the calibers covered for varmit shooting, so why not go 221fb, and have a great 250-300yd low noise, accurate gun, i have two and love them for these reasons.

The PPC is coming up a lot! They say it's the most accurate 200yds gun out there.

I guess the 6BR would also be a choice!

There's nothing wrong with the 223, it's a Sendero Varmit and has shot flawlessly for years! I don't know how many rounds went down the tube! All I know is if I give the barrel a good cleaning, it takes 50 rounds before it will start grouping again!!!!!

Still thinking . . . .

DennisH,

If you stay with 223 boltface. 223AI, you can shoot standard 223 and 223AI. I am looking at a 20 TAC for myself. If you open it up, go with 6BR 12 tw, you can run up to 80 gr bullets. I have kills on Va groundhogs past 600 yds with 70 gr bullets. If you don't have a 6BR you need one. The PPC is good out to 300 yds, but the 6BR will clean it's clock, past that.

Stuipid question: 223A1 brass and dies, I assume they are different than the regular 223's?

Is the A1 worth going for?

If you want to shoot 6mm bullets, look at the 6X45 (6mm on the 223 case) or 6X47 which is the 222 rem mag necked up. The 6X47 was a bench rest case before the PPC came along. No change to the bolt.

Like Wapati said, 6mm-223 would be nice. That would eliminate any issue with the bolt and still be a good performing round with a larger bullet diameter.

Though I am overly fond of the triple deuce, even though it isn't the fastest thing ever. When you get pinpoint accuracy with near zero recoil it's really sweet to shoot.

If you decide to enlarge the bolt face, a 22ppc or 22br would be super accurate screamers as well.

i HAVE A NEW IN BOX BERGARA .223 TO SELL, 300.00 TO YOUR DOOR, 26" S.S. 1-10 TWIST, THREADED AND CHAMBERED SO YOU CAN FIT IT YOURSELF.

What is the interest in Bergara barrels? I have seen them advertised but I don't know any thing about their history. How do they compair to Hart, Krieger, Shilen, and the other USA made barrels? Anyone shooting great groups with them?

Plus one on a 222. I have one on a varmit rifle and they are just fun to shoot, point and hit within 300yds and does not just give up byond that compaired to my 223 or 22-250. I have thought about a long necked 223 but brass is a problem as to getting good 222mag as being ify. It also may not be as good as 22PPC or 22BR. Their are so many good cartridges it's hard to make a choice because I want one or two of each. I'm looking to build a 221 FB my self.

The 222 is hard to beat. Barrels last for ever and so does the Laupa brass.

I have a 222 barrel on my XP100 action. It is getting the moly coated 30 gr Berger match bullets up to 3,945 fps according to my crony with 22 grs of IMR 4198.

Action is in a Benchrest Stock and is very precise at 100 yards and better than I had expected at 300 yards. Lots of fun to shoot and no recoil makes it easy.
