223 to 223AI

You need to ream the chamber to the shoulder profile, 40° . Just a swag on my part but guessing.060-.080 thou off the tenon to get the reamer into fresh shoulder meat.
With the body blown out, there is metal available to clean up. It is the shoulder that needs to have material for the reamer to remove to get the 40° .
Go to front of home page and do some dimensional comps and you'll get the idea.

While on this topic, how about some feedback from you anal smiths who have the dimension figured to clean up a 223Rem chamber. I just be a curious old retired toolmaker. :p;)

Can I go from 223 to 223AI without set back or removing the barrel?
You can but you probably shouldn't. All the cool kids set the barrel back exactly one thread. Engraving lines up, gives you a fresh chamber and chambered properly gives you a slight crush fit on the factory brass.

You want an Ackley to have a firm bolt close on virgin brass for perfect fire forming.

If you just ream a longer chamber your necks will be very short after forming.

You want a slight crush with the Ackley chamber which you don't have now. And even without the crush reaming that much by hand will likely end up with quite a bit of run out in the chamber.

If you have a Savage, no.
You still "set it back" but machining is usually not required.
With the AI, you want a firm interface with the neck/shoulder junction on standard 223 Rem cases due to the shoulder being blown out & moved forward.

If you want a TRUE AI you will need to set the barrel back so you have a crush fit for fire forming. With a Savage you MIGHT be able to turn the barrel in enough to get a crush fit without machining the barrel.

Without removing the barrel or setting back the barrel:

You can use a 223 AI reamer and build a 223 Improved, not 223 AI and will have to form a false shoulder for a crush fit to fire form. False shoulder run your brass over a 6mm expander ball and them size in a 223 AI die until the bolt closes snugly. For loading you use your 223 AI die and add a shim to the top of the shell shoulder to make up for the longer base to shoulder length.

Yes you can hand ream the barrel on the action, go slowly, measure a lot, use plenty of lube/cutting oil and clean the reamer often. I've done two 223's to 22-204 that way and a 6x47 Rem to 6mm-204. I made a bushing for my reamer handle to keep it centered in the action and all have turned out to be very accurate.

You can also screw up a good barrel that way.

It can be done but You need to have a someone who knows how to do it, and they're fading fast. All these computer camandos blow this all out of the water. The only way to do anything is at great expense
