223 target rifle ?

I am wanting to find a 223 to use in 100 to 300 yards matches. I know there are better choices, but I have a twice repaired shoulder, and I'm fully set up to load for 223.

I really like the Remington short barreled tactical with the over molded stock.

everyone around here shoots .5 MOA.

The problem is the 1/9 twist. That will limit my bullet weight. All of the heavy bullets call for 1/7 or 1/8 twist.

Does anyone make a bolt action with that fast twist rate? I want to keep it stock so I don't have to go into the open class.

I'm I stuck with going to an AR target upper? (not like that is a bad option)

Thanks

Gene

Some of us have had good results with 75gr. Hornady BTHP's and A-Maxs
with 1-9" twist Savages.

But if I was going to buy buy new for Factory Class it would be either the Savage LRPV or the Tikka T-3.

+ 1 for the Savage in 223 with a 1 in 7 twist tube, 600 yards? Gonna need 75gr A-max's or 80gr berger vld's, something with a high bc.

Hornady says the 75 A-Max works in 9" but I have no experience with it. Dantiff2 is correct about heavier bullets. 80g need at least 8", 90g need 7". Sounds like 7" is your safest bet.

Remington 5-R milspec all the way!

I am shooting everything from 55 nosler ballistic tips to 75 amax with my 1-9 twist under 1/2 moa getting groups in the .2s quite frequntly off a harris bipod!

This is a factory rifle with no work done to it

For 100-300 yd shooting I would try and find a 1:12 or 1:14 twist and shoot one of the many 52 gr custom flat base bullets. That's my opinion free of charge.... ::) Tim

One of my .223s has a 26" 1-12 twist barrel. 300 yarsd and closer velocity and accuracy are more important than BC. At 3650 fps, the 40 gr Nosler (most accurate bullet out of that rifle) beats out any heavier bullet to 300 yards simply because none of the heavier higher BC bullets can be fired at a high enough velocity to gain any advantage at all. Once you get past 350 yards or so then it makes a difference.

Past that range to 1,000, I have a 1-8 twist .223 which will stabilize the 80 gr bullets and have been thinking on a faster twist for the newer 90 gr bullets.
