.223 Remington 35gr./40gr High Velocity Loads

@ 4000 fps, spin is:

12 Twist= 240,000 rpm
9 Twist= 320,000 rpm
8 Twist= 360,000 rpm

I seem to remember reading that Hornaday redlines their bullet at about 275,000 RPM, though I can't find that reference on their website. May have to call C.S. to get it.

Using a stock Savage barrel, with it's anything but hand lapped, more like railroad track rifling, that the bullets hold together for you is amazing.

FWIW: I shoot the 53 g V-Max (great B.C) out of a 26 inch Criterion 8 twist using 25.2 gr. IMR 3031, L.C. brass and get 3350 fps and extremely good accuracy. The 53 gr V-Max really has some legs due to its B.C.

I'll run some numbers through a ballistics calculator and see which one is superior at say, 500 yds. These are based upon 4000 fps which is for comparison only. You can't get 4000 fps out of a 53 gr in a 223 Rem.

35 gr.V-Max Velocity/drop at 500 yds = 907 fps, -92.8 inches
53 gr. V-Max Velocity/drop at 500 yds = 2278 fps, -28.6 inches

As you can see, raw speed is only one consideration. I can also tell you that at 500 yds, the 53 gr makes easy work of 4 inch clays and is waaaay better at handling winds.

53 gr. V-Max: Velocity/drop at 3350 fps, 500 yds is 1837 fps, -44.4 inches

I hope this helps.

A long time ago I had a 223 Savage 1:9 Model 10 with a Rubbermaid stock, if I recall. Was loading anything and everything, so I tried some 35 grainers, don’t remember who made them, but loaded them up max and shot bowling pins at 300 yards. I was absolutely amazed that as soon as I pulled the trigger they fell over, like instantly. I don’t know how fast they were going, but it must have been pretty quick.
