223 Rem Varminting and Long Range Round

As Ronemus stated 75 gr hpbt is one of the highest BC s you ll get to run through magazine. That said I ve been able to get 75 eldm to stabilize out of my 9 twist Vanguard with a stout load of H4895 and 3000’ elevation. Shot so well at 650 that a machinist friend build me a spacer for my Mag and by removing short factory spacer and putting in our shorter machined spacer I can run those 2.460 oal 75 gr Eldms through the magazine now. It makes my 223 perform much better at distances beyond 350-400 yards.

I can pretty well guarantee that it won't be stable at sea level on a cold day. I don't want to change my loads with the seasons or location, so I choose a bullet/twist combination that will work under almost all conditions.

Oh that's true. Where I shoot most of my range work these tend to be the conditions

Humidity 70%+ (More likely over 80%)

Heavy, dense, thick, sluggish air that sucks the speed and stability out of your bullet like you would not believe

My load of choice for my 600 Remington with a 22", 1:9 twist, match chambered barrel by E.R. Shaw is the Berger 73 grain BT target loaded 0.010" off the lands and ahead of 22.0 grains of VV N135 and a BR primer @ 2750 fps. Managed a 5/8" - 5 shot group off the bench last evening, 60 degrees with variable winds at 200 yards.
Might be able to do better if I could get the trigger from the current 4# to something more reasonable.

I tried the 73gr ELD-M in my rifle and it's just too damn long to go through my magazine which for a varmint bullet I would very much like.

I load these in AR15 magazines and get excellent accuracy. You’re saying your magazine can’t handle 2.26”?

Too long for the powder I was trying to use and not be VERY compressed whilst staying within magazine length.

Can’t really blame the bullet if you’re not working up a load at the oal that works. Usually I’d set the charge weight and powder choice after choosing bullet and max oal. The 73 will shoot well as mild as 22.1 of 8208. Lots of room in the case but good enough for a 200-14x in my rifle.

Hi folks,

In my quest to develop a "suite" of loads for my 1:9 twist 223 Rem bolt action, I am looking for a longer range target load and a varmint load.

I was reading around the internet (always a dangerous idea) and I wondered if I could use the same bullet for both?

So I have 2 questions:

1) Has anyone used the 60gr Sierra TMK for varmints and how's you find it?
2) Has anyone used the 60gr Nosler Varmint Ballistic tips for longer range shooting?

Follow up question: Does anyone have any other suggestions?

My rifle is a CZ527 and handles 5.56 NATO pressues fine so I would think I would use Ramshot TAC or Exterminator so should be able to run them ~3,100 out of the 22" bbl.

Check out the info at Accurate Shooter on this website for 223 info. It gives recommended bullets for 100-300 yrds, 300-600 and longer range. 69-75 gr for long range. Run some numbers thru the Berger program for drop and wind drift.

I have used Xterminator ( Same as Accurate 2230) in my 1 in 7 AR and a 65gr Sierra Gameking with bolt gun accuracy. This bullet works well on smaller pigs . I haven't shot any bigger ones yet.

I have a TC Venture II. 223/5.56. My load is 50 Vmax and H335. I have a 480 yd kill with this load on a Pdawg, last week.. Yes I held over.

I used that same bullet and powder in my .223 AI to tag a 705 yard pasture poodle several years go. Yes, I held WAY over that sucker! Did not get it on my first shot either. Not even close.
