.223 Rem match chamber?

I'm looking at that chambering for my next FTR barrel. My understanding is it does not require turning necks.

I have this chamber on my bolt gun, 223 palma rifle. Never turned brass for it. It's a tight chamber so I wouldn't use it on a gas gun.

Right now with Fed match brass and 69smk I am at .247" neck dia. PT&G reamer for match .223 rem is .251" neck. I think it will be good. I am looking at Criterion remage barrel. Hopefully they use the PT&G reamer.

Well, I'll be honest with you, I didn't realize it was that tight. My .308 Palma chamber is tight. I can run Winchester brass in it without having to turn the necks.

Ditto on natdscott's post. My PTG 223 Match reamer print shows a .254" neck dia., while the print for my PTG 223 Wylde shows a .2558" neck.

Get your brass first, then spec. the reamer off of it. As AckleymanII said, brass differs.

These are questions best answered by the barrel supplier. They should be able to tell you exactly what the neck dia is, as well as throat length. You might also ask for a copy of the reamer print to verify.

  1. I have a Shilen .223 Match chamber on an A/R, as well as a Krieger pre-fit A/R barrel. The "Match" chambers are normally just a minimum dimension .223 chamber and do not need necks turned. Do be aware though that in many cases, they are not meant for stiff loads such as in 5.56, as one can get by with such as using a Wylde chamber. They are fine with all full-power .223 loads though.

wow more mis-information.

My .223 necks are .250" which gives .002" with unturned IMI or other domestic brass. This is on a bolt gun, just right. The large Lapua would take about .001" cut neckturning. Nice thing about turning is, not that hard to do and you can make necksize precisely what you want. Trimming? .223 brass is supposedly 1.760" long but in reality it's shorter than that. More like 1.755" from what I've seen. And "trim-to" length is 1.50" which what many people think is the way to go. But .223 chambers, and factory chambers for sure, can be up to 1.800" long. That's a lot of empty space. You can shoot .223 cases forever and they'll never grow enough to hit the end of one of those chambers. So another thing for a "match" chamber - bolt gun - would be to have it cut with a reamer maybe no more than .010" longer than the brass.

RSMITHSR50; You call what I said misinformation. Tell that to the folks from whom I bought the barrels - as that is what they both told me. If that is what the actual barrel manufacturers tell me about their products - I have no problem passing that information on as coming from a trusted source. I realize there are always those who know more about a product than those making and selling it. More power to you.

I have a nss criterion 223 rem match barrel. The chamber difference over the standard ar style 223, is freebore... it has 0.090" freebore to run heavier bullets (75-80) without pushing them deep in the case. I am using reworked LC brass that weighs 91-92gr each. 75gr vld, 26gr varget, cci 450, @ 2.48" is amazingly accurate @ 3000+ fps

When someone states that there is .090" freebore, how is that calculated? From end of case to when rifling first starts? Sorry if I'm hijacking and thanks!
