223 Rem 10" Twist

Anyone have experience with a 10" twist in the 223 Rem.

Specifically is this twist rate capable of varmint level accuracy (i.e. 1/2 moa) with 55 or 50 grain bullets. Also, does this faster twist rate reduce barrel life.

Nope, but i`d add the 53 amax to your list of bullets with that 10 twist......

The 60`s would work too, but the 50-53 would be faster......

Phil.

Not sure what you mean by "faster" twist. A 10-twist is extremely slow in my opinion, because I shoot 90 VLDs out of 7-twist barrels. So it's really all relative to the bullets you're using. In any event, the 10-twist is not going to dramatically reduce barrel life. I shot a 10-twist barrel for a number of years. It shot well with bullets weights/lengths over a pretty wide range, from 40 gr all the way up to 77 gr. As a guess, I would say the optimal range for a 10-twist would likely be in the 50 to 68/69 gr range, but mine worked well over a wider range than that. If it's a well-made barrel and is attached to a well-made rifle, it's most likely capable of 1/2 MOA precision, or possibly better. Much of that will depend on you. However, there is nothing inherently wrong about a 10-twist rate that would cause a barrel not to shoot precisely because of the twist, if that's what you're asking.

I have a Tikka .223 with a 1/10 twist. I'm able to shoot 69 SMKs out to 500 yards with good accuracy. I would think it will have no problems producing 1/2 MOA groups for varmint level accuracy.

Here's 3 69 SMKs @ 500 yards:

Wow - that's impressive - However I'd be shooting 50 and 55 grain bullets - I know that accuracy depends a a wide range of factors I was just wondering if the 10" twist was too fast for 50 and 55 grain bullets. Looking a Sako A7 in 223 Rem with 10" twist.

I have a Savage FV12 with 9 twist, it seems to prefer the 40-50gr's in factory ammo so far. No hand loads tested on it yet if this info helps. I have a 700 varmint rig with a 12 twist, it prefers the lighter stuff as well but it's been a long time since I shot it any.

If you can get the vertical worked out of that load you have a winner! :)

223AI 9 twist here, 53 vmax (preferred bullet) and 40BK at over 330K RPM, works fine.

The 53 vmax is a great compromise between speed, accuracy, BC, and terminal performance on PD's.

For real longer range performance in your FV 12 , try the Berger 73 grain bullet
