223 OAL

Where do you guys seem to have the best luck with OAL?? The usual trend seems to be the closer the bullet is to the lands the better. I COMPLETELY understand that no 2 rifles are the same! I'm just wondering how close, or far away you have the best luck.

I'm working on an 8 twist 223 currently. :)

I have had 788's, 700's, and customs with zero freebore. All of them shot very small groups less than 1/3" with the bullet just barely touching the lands. As the leade grew, groups would still hover in the 5/8" range as the bullet jumped .050 or so. The poly tip bullet groups would open up more than a std Sierra Sp due to less bearing surface.

None of the 22's that I had would shoot bug holes with bullets jamming the lands .003 or more.

how do you find out when your bullet is touching the riffling, if i don't hace a guage..i tried putting a bullet in a casing and make it black to see if it was,, but that didn't work,,

It's pretty well made and an excellent tool to have handy! You do need to get a modified case for each cartridge.

;D Don't know! The neck an throat is so long on my factory 223 I have yet to find a bullet that will stay in the case when it touches the lands!! They all fall out!! ;D

Low runout is key for me, outside turning and bullet runout of less than .002 still gives me sub moa out too 300, I'm quite content with that.
I trim the cases a bit long and seat to a minimum with proper tension.
It's all I can do, but again proper seating with low runout seems be the magic. ;)
