223 nat match load for amu type rifle

just got to this rifle, a new upper from Creedmore on top of an old bottom, Colt h-bar comp from years ago. has the twenty inch 7.7 barrel and NM sites. worked all day yesterday, finally found the 69grain SMK and Varget, 26 grains, setting the bullet out to jam into the rifling about 15 thousenths, really turned it on with groups coming into 1 inch moa groups, 5 shots, easily. Had not shot Varget in the rifle until yesterday. take that to the bank for the varget guys, good stuff.

Those bullets are designed to be shot at mag length. Most all NM uppers will shoot .5moa or better @100yds. with that load. Seat the bullets to mag length and try it. I hope you are not still using the stock trigger? If so that would be the next part I would replace.

the trigger is the next item to be replaced. who does the best trigger for the ar15? anyone tried to put a new trigger into a gun?

Geisselle then Extreme are the top triggers for the AR. If you plan to shoot in the service rifle class you will need to get the 2 stage service rifle trigger that will give you a legal trigger pull. If you can't swing the $280.00 for either one of these I would get a rock river nm. They run about $125.00 but are non-adjustable. I have a great used rock river I would sell for $85.00 shipped to lower 48.

There is nothing wrong with a 2 stage Rock River trigger. A lot of triggers cost more but I don't think the significant increase in expense is worth it ( my opinion only). Use the savings toward other necessary equipment or ammo for practice. If you shoot an X it will be there the same as if you shoot a 9.
The load you give is max for 69gr bullets in Sierra. You may want to try 24gr for 200-300yds. The same load with 80gr bullets works for 600yds.

yes: I did a litlle research on the phone, and talked with some other shooters and after that I ordered a Geissel(?) yesterday. I reviewed a writeup of another shooter, really about 5 guys, who ordered this same trigger for the colt rifles they shoot, all of which they personally installed the triggers, without much ado, no problems, and no metal working in the colt rifles, and so I hope to get what I need when the time comes for me to get this trigger into my H-bar colt. thanks guys for the imput, and I will have pic's and info after I get this in.

I have two Geissele triggers, but you need to remember that they make a match rifle and standard (service rifle) trigger, depending on the required total pull, and all are two stage.

Then, you need to know if you have a large or small pin lower if you want to be sure it will fit.

They are great- well made, and easy to install.

I would have to say that Tom Myers makes the best AR Trigger. Also, try the SIE 77 SMK's. You will get beat up at 300 yards with those 69's.. I know.

This is my opinion- You will get blown all over the target at 300 with the 69 sierra.

When I was shooting HP on the CA Grizzly's junior rifle team this is the load that I shot-
LC 08 or Winchester brass
WSR primer
24.0 Grains of Varget
75 Grain Hornady HPBT

at 600 I shot this.
LC 08 or Winchester
WSR primer
23.4 grains VV N140 (I was low on varget)
80 SMK jumped .015

When we set the rattle battle record and beat the AMU we all shot the same load-
LC brass
not sure on primer. Probably a Rem 7.5
24.5 Grains Varget
75 grain Hornady HPBT

AFTER camp perry I changed my loads around.
Winchester brass
Rem 7.5
24.5 Varget
73 grain Berger

For 600 I shot this.
Winchester brass
Rem 7.5
24.5 Varget
82 Grain Berger jumped .015-.020

The 75 grain Hornady is a GREAT bullet out to 300. Past that it is a bit iffy. The 80 SMK is the standard. I used the 82 Berger because we were sponsored by Berger and got them for 5 bucks a box. I dont know if the 82 Berger is better than the SMK but the are very similar.

Brass is important. You will be shooting hot loads in a gas gun. Your brass will not last that long. Winchester brass seems to be plagued by loose primer pockets. But I had a lot of it.

Primers are also important. I HATED the WSR primer. But we had a lot of them and my Dad wouldn't buy me any Remingtons. The WSR primers have very soft cups and you will get cratering and piercing. After the 4th or 5th firing pin change I convinced my dad to buy me Remingtons. Havent had a primer problem since.

This is my recommendation to you: Shoot 24.5 grains of varget with the bullet of your choice. Use a Remington primer and forget about it.
It is more important to train than to have ammo that can shoot a quarter inch better at 600. you probably wont even notice how well the ammo shoots until you can average a 195+ at 600.
Best wishes,
Matt Chezem

The X-treme trigger is $50 less than a Geiselle and is made from EDM machined tool steel, then coated with FailZero, which never needs lubricant.

Now I have a rifle that shoot the lights out. had a gieseele trigger put in, and have been shooting 80smk, with 24 grains of varget, cci primer. great shooter, brass I use now is the LC new brass from wideners. excellent brass and takes the hot loads well. thanks to everyone on the site for the good advice.
