223 Loads - Shotshell and Other Powders

Hi Guys,

Under the current shortage in everything ammo and reloading related I find myself short on powder for 223. I have bullets ranging from 50-62 gr and a bunch of Red Dot and Blue Dot. Does anyone have any data for these powders and 223?

I also have a pound or less of the following, any hits with them?

Hercules 2400
Accurate #7
IMR SR 4756
IMR4350
IMR4198
IMR4064
Win760
Bullseye

Thanks for any help gents,

Adam

I will do and thank you!

I am somewhat a novice to reloading. I have loaded a few thousand rounds but not anything that wasn't clearly published as safe. You mentioned burn rates, can you give me a general overview of the effect of burn rates in different cases?

If I am understanding then, certain burn rates fit well with certain cartridges. I assume this has to do with the length of time the bullet is in the barrel and an attempt to fully burn the powder as the bullet exits for the best efficiency?

I have much to learn. . . Thank you for taking the time to read my mental wanderings!

So a powder that is too fast then if used in too large a charge will create too much pressure before the bullet exits the barrel and be unsafe? And if the charge is light enough, it may not actually have enough force to drive the bullet from the bore?

Will a slower powder than optimum powder just be inefficient or is there a dangerous effect here as well?

The following is all published data:

Speer 45 Spitz 14.9gr 2400 3,030fps 49,600psi Centerfire Rifle data
Hornady 50 SP 14.5gr 2400 2,795fps 48,500psi Centerfire Rifle data
Hornady 55 FMJ 14.0gr 2400 2,685fps 49,900psi Centerfire Rifle data

Sierra 55gr Spitz 15.9gr 2400 2,430fps 48,500psi Handgun Silhouette data, 14" barrel
Hornady 60 Spire Pt 15.4gr 2400 2,320fps 48,500psi Handgun Silhouette data, 14" barrel

All loads shown are MAX--Federal 205M primers for all.

Source--Alliant Powder Reloaders Guide (free)--no date but Steel and Reloader 25 were new powders.

There are some published cast bullets loads with some of your listed powders if you want them, but they are subloads.
