223 lion load.

I currently carry a Ruger Hawkeye predator in 223rem. It is my truck and kicking around gun but I might replace it with the Ruger Compact laminate in same caliber. Both rifles are a one in nine twist. There is the possability also that I might just have the barrel cut down to 21" on the Ruger Predator. My shots are limited to 250 yards and ninty percent of those are 150 or less. I want a good load for mt lion and coyotes. Not sure if I should go with 60gr partitions or something along the lines of a 70gr sierra. What would you use or load for this application.

I shot 60 Partitions in my truck gun a XP-100 221 Fireball and have absolutely no problem killing feral hogs up to 300 lbs with this bullet out of a 10.75" barrel.

Regards
RJ

Shoot which ever one produces the best accuracy as either should work. Sirra make a 63 bullet that has worked for me on deer.

Take a look at the 65gr Sierra Game King. Most accurate 224 hunting bullet I have ever used. Have made several clean kills on deer with it.

Glen, you had better do some research on twist rate is on your rifle!!

Then you will know the options on your choices.

Glen, I hunted yotes for 26 years in Ca and Az, killed one lion and called in one other.

A tough 55g bullet such as a Sierra 55g BTHP, 55g Spt, 55g Spt BT, and the Hornady 55g are great on yotes and will do ok on lions if you place your shot well, these bullets do not fly apart.

Avoid any plastic tip bullet for lions in 22 caliber.

If you are seeing a lot of lion tracks in the area you hunt, then get a 22/250 or a 243 even better.

I hunted with a lot of guys that had been varmint calling since the 60's, none of them had ever called in a lion.
