223 in a 600 F Class

Good Afternoon,

Yesterday I shot in my first 600 YD F/Class Match. I was the only one shooting a 223 against the 308's in F/TR. There were a lot of snickers at first. But once the dust settled, a lot of guys seemed very interested in my stock Savage F/TR 7 twist. I finished in second place out of 8 shooters. Those 90 Gr Berger VLD's and Varget turned a few heads. They are a dream to shoot and very little recoil. I really enjoy BR shooting, but I think I'm hooked on F/Class. It was a blast.

I also shoot a .223/90VLD combo in F-TR and don't think I would change that. Our range only goes to 600 yards and it is perfect for that. I will be shooting 900m on the weekend and have high hopes for this "little fella". I've never shot it past 600 yet, but it holds good vertical at 600 so there shouldn't be a problem. We will see soon enough.

BTW, just another thing to throw into the mix, with my load and calculations I will get 2293 loads from my 3.5kg jug of N150, the .308 guys will only get ~ 1170. Plus my bullets are $.14/piece cheaper (If their using Berger 155.5's) with a ~20% better BC and almost no recoil....Sounds like a good choice to me.

hello Ken, just wondering if you have a standard savage chamber in your unit. i was thinking of trying some 90 grainers in a Wylde chamber, or are they a bit short for the longer pills. what sort of varget load are you using.
cheers Pete

I shoot a 223 with 90VLDs in a Wylde chamber and it works just fine. I can't speak to Varget as I use RL-15 and 2000MR. In a 30" Palma rifle with 7 twist, speeds are easily up to 2800. I am currently shooting faster than that. Your results may vary.

Prior to throating mine for the 90's I used 75 or 80 gr. Hornady A max for the 600 yd. work, I won the VT State F/TR Title with that combo beating out a bunch of .308's.

Hey Pete,

Yes, I have the standard Savage Chamber. I push the 90Gr Berger VLD's with 23.6 gr of Varget, but definitely work up to this load!!!!!! At 23.8 Gr, my bolt got sticky. I'm using Lapua Brass, CCI 450 Primers shooting .0200 off of the lands.

Hope you have Good luck with the load, Ken
