223, How fast?

Hello All,
I shoot F class using a Remington XR-100 action with 27 inch 1 in 8 twist barrel. I do not have a chronograph so can only calculate the approximate velocity. I suffer from vertical stringing and two knowledgable and respected shooters said that my velocity is to low for 600yds plus shooting and therefeore get verticals.
I decided to load several rounds for pressure testing.
Using once fired cases, weighed for uniformity.
CCI-BR4 primers.
80gn SMK's touching lands.
I was loading 24.2 of 2206H,H4895, I think) no signs of pressure. rounds from 24.2 to 24.7 in 3 increments were fired with no signs of pressure.Primers still 0.002" below case.
What velocity would I be getting? I calculated, mathmatically, that it would be about 2920 fps.
Is this too theoretical?

Kind Regards

Quickload says that 24.2 grains of H4895 is 2951 fps with pressure just under 65,000 and 24.7 of H4895 is 3003 fps with pressure over 69,000.

Although you are not expreincing pressure signs, these are pretty HOT loads.

You did not give and OAL length and this will affect the pressures and velocities I listed above. With no OAL, I just used my 69 gr SMK load length - probably shorter than yours.

Vertical stringing doesn't mean your charge is too low, it just means it's wrong. That is, you're probably in between sweet spots and need to go back and redo your load workup to find the spot where the vertical stringing is minimal.

Thank you both for the replies, I will back the load off a bit and do some load workups to find that "sweet spot". Travelor you mentioned "Quickload" is this a data base or a program?
Thanks again for the replies.
Cheers

I forgot to mention, if I recall my OAL is 65mm or 2.559", this is touching the lands, but I will measure when I get home tonight to verify this.
Cheers

IMO, you really should chronograph the loads. Particularly if you want to push them hard like that. You may very well be above the zone where that powder gives consistent velocities. A large velocity spread would give vertical stringing.

I'm curious, how did you mathematically calculate your theoretical velocity, since you don't have Quickload? Are you extrapolating from Sierra's data?

I would say it's inaccurate. In a 26" barrel, I did not see the same as they got in their 24" for velocity,I got less). Did not try H4895, but saw this with 4 of the powders listed.

A person at our club loads them heavier and the velocity is around 2950-3000 with very good accuracy at the longer distances.
